    Hi all,
I was reading an article about using an old computer to host your own website's, can you sell hosting if you do this or is there problems?

    Don't even try it.
Use a datacenter. When someone pays for hosting there are many things they expect and one of which is their site to be in a safe and secure data center with fast connections.
You could colocate but I am guessing it would be cheaper just to rent a dedicated server.
Best thing if you want to start hosting would be get a reseller account.

To host a home you will probably need a 10mbps download and upload connection, a ups, a static ip address, and lastly a decent processor. You would also need to get a control panel like cPanel to make it easier for clients to manage their site.

If people found it cost effective to host at home I am sure that everyone would be doing it but there are way to many risks and problems with it

You should not host clients websites on low-end computer. To avoid downtimes caused by hardware problems you should buy or lease very good server and of course connect it in data center and not at home.

I wouldn't recommend trying to sell web hosting if you're going to use an old computer, especially if it's at your home.

It just isn't feasible to host websites from your home. Even with a fast connection, it's not as reliable as a data center.

Fair enough that makes sense alright, the guy I was reading about was using it for his own website only, is that a different story?

That's entirely different. If you're only going to host a personal website, then it would probably be fine. But you'll need to have experience with the technical aspect of servers.

yea if you are using it for your own site thats a risk that ones taking. But again it all depends on the software you have setup on the server, what kind of connection, ups system so if power goes out you can still stay connected, and another thing is if your ISP goes down for some reason there is not much you can do.

But if your hosting clients and you run into problems all your clients are going to be mad.

Also another thing is hosting sites on a low end server would not be efficent as cpanel alone uses a lot of memory plus having many other sites on your server will use a lot of cpu and memory. Not having enough will make your clients sites load up slow.

Im not saying its not impossible to host at home it can be done if you have the right tools. You can always transform your basement or something into a data center, have a backup generator etc... You can also bring in a fiber line straight to your house but of course this will be super expensive.
But then again how many people will think hosting in a basement is safe? is there any security?

There are a lot of things that you have to think about, so thats why going with a data center is much better, easier, safer, and costs less.

That is good point. Most people don't recommend to get with free hosts but solid free hosting will be IMHO better then running website from home on the old computer.
