Hi I recently purchased a godaddy domain, and I already have my website pages done in html via dream weaver. Only thing is, I'm having trouble find a good host. I tired 110mb but they are so outdated and can't even host images. I tried freewebs and everything was ok until I found out I can't change the domain name with freewebs until 60 days. Can anyone recommend a good host If I'm using my own domain and html pages off dream weaver? Its ok if I have to pay, as long as I don't have to deal with all this mess. Also, can anyone explain why certain elements of my background layout are missing when I upload a html to a server?
Agree with dmi. As far as your last question Are you using a css stylesheet? If so make sure that you have that uploaded and that everything is referenced properly in your html.
If you are using a Linux web host then you have to make sure that the filename case are the same with the actual file against what is reference in the web pages. 'image.gif' is not the same as 'Image.gif' on the Linux server. If however it is windows then it is case insensitive. Additionally, check the HTML codes within Dreamweaver before you post the html pages because sometimes it uses local directory path inside of relative path which you should use on the web.
What is the benifit of paying for a host like host gator, rather than using freewebs or 110mb? Is it easier to post my dreamweaver pages without hassle?
It depends on the nature of your website. If it is a personal website then a free web hosting would do but if you are running a business website then it would look more professional with a paid hosting account. Free web host needs to make money in order to pay for their services and in doing so, they will most likely add banner advertisements on your website so they can earn something to cover part of the cost. Those who do not make money would inevitably close down sooner or later. Free hosting also have serious restriction as far as bandwidth or contents that you can have and usually does not provide you any support. With a Paid hosting, there is a lot less restriction and now that web hosting is relatively cheap, there is no reason to not go with them. Most free web hosting only allows you to upload your web pages through the web interface while with paid hosting, you can use ftp to upload.
