Hello, I am planning to start a small image hosting service for some of my friends and family. However, no matter where I go, most the big name companies try to charge me a fortune for dedicated servers, or refuse to allow image hosting. Where can I go? Im looking from soemthing around $5 to $10 a month.

I don't think you will get shared hosting that will allow image hosting.

For image hosting, I would suggest you to find yourself a vps instead.

You should go for the virtual private server solutions. If you want windows VPS, I recommend vpsland.com

Dedicated Server - Individual Server leased to you per month or on contract - That server is yours, you have root access.

VPS - This is a Virtual Private Server. 5-25 Virtual Operating Systems can be hosted off one big individual server. The Virtual Private Server acts just like a individual server, however its run amongst other VPS's on one physical box.

actually you can consider Hostgator Business plan: Dedicated IP + Own Toll-Free Number at $12.95/month.

But you will get 20% off when you use Hostgator coupon, so you will be paying $10.36/month, right in your budget.

Here is the 20% off coupon link: Hostgator coupon

You definatly need a VPS for that, best thing about them is that you can start off small and then work your way up untill your big enough to go for dedicated servers.
One problem about VPS's are control pannels make sure that your host gives you something like LxAdmin for free as that will make things alot easier for you.
Another thing to look out for is management, VPS servers require you to know some SSH linux commands, if you don't can make things hard and also unsecure so hackers could find expoits.
Gain a good relationship with your host and they should help out with the basics :)

Thanks everyone for your input! I have been evaluating all the VPS providers you have suggested, and while they all looked good price wise, they were lacking the storage capabilities I am looking for. I propbably should have mentioned this earlier, but the amount of people I plan on letting use my image hosting service, is about 20. A few of such people are avid photographers, and can have anywhere from 1gb to 10gb's of photos. So, I need something with storage capabilities of at least 20gb, and the ability to expand when I need it. On the other hand, I dont think I will need much bandwidth, as most of these people only plan on posting their uploaded images into places like forums, and emails and such.

By the way, I checked out webhostingpad.com, and everything looked great. That is, until I read their TOU. It says "Webhostingpad servers are also NOT be used as a backup storage and is only intented for hosting web files." Can this be taken to mean that I cannot run an image hosting service with them?

Okay, I went ahead and contacted webhostingpad, and they said they would allow an image hosting service, however, the maximum amount of files im aloud to have is 10,000.

An entry level dedicated server is going to start around $200 US dollars a month and go up from there. You might find a server for less then that, but not much less.

Your asking about 2 totally different things here. You want to spend about $10 a month, but your looking for a dedicated server? That is not how things work.

For $10 a month, you MIGHT get a very small account on a shared server. But a lot of the shared accounts I see start at around $15 a month and go up. And for image hosting, a shared server is not going to do the job anyway.

For image processing, I recommend a Virtual Private Server (VPS) with at least 512 megs of memory. That is going to cost around $50 a month. And 512 is the minimum I recommend. If your getting a lot of traffic, then maybe a VPS with 800 - 1 gig of memory. And for that your looking at around $75 - $90 a month.

If your serious about building a website, you going to have to be serious about getting a real server. And that is going to cost money.

Now then, if your looking for a host, take a look at Future Hosting. I have been with them for 2 years. My first server was a small VPS, then I upgraded all the way to an entry level dedicated server last month.
