It depends, if the site been submitted is related to the directory and if the correct category is chosen then it should be ok.

I wonder what larger directories think about it.

As long as you are submitting relevant sites to relevant categories, I don't think this should be a problem with most of the directories.
However, some directories have specific guidelines for submission and may disapprove.

 

waaahhh!!! i missed this thread when im SEOing a website of my former client... shoots! nice thread and it was posted on my bday! hehehe hmm... maybe i should get save this page...

 

there is a dmoz category at http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Searching/Directories/ - could be usefull if you need directories in other languages!
