"Submitting to web directories will get you part of the way there"

Exactly. And once more people begin to realize that reality, the more successful they will become in their link and traffic building strategy.

The web directories were 5-7 years ago the holly grail of seo, but now you can't do miracles, anyway a backlink is still a backlink. The experiment is good, but you have to take into account how much work (and time) you consumed with directory submissions and the results that you were able to get if you have taken a different kind of seo approach.

Most directories that I've seen are asking for Reciprocal Link URLs back to the site. Are you having all these link backs on your site or searching for specific ones that don't require it?

A lot of directories display the reciprocal url field but it's optional to provide one. if the directory provides a 'free' submission option then you dont need to provide a compulsory reciprocal link. I use submiteaze and it has separate lists for 'free' and 'reciprocal' directories so it's easy to choose which I want to submit to, but even the free ones still have a 'reciprocal url' field, it's just not compulsory to provide one.

For the experiment I didn't do any reciprocal linking. However, on other site's I'll do a reciprocal link if it is to a very good directory in the niche.

I've done a lot of research on the topic too. I've come back undecided. I think that directories establish a little bit of presence but are probably not the strongest strategy you can use.

It would be good to know which keywords or what topic are talking about because there are topics in which the competiton is really great and it is very tough to be near the first page of the Google SERP for keywords and you have no chance of getting near if you don't have tens of thosands of backlinks. Otherwise I agree that it is good to start by submitting your site to free directories (never paying ones) but it is only a starter.

Great information and statistics mate! The key ingredient here is unique description as this will increase indexing rates of the listing details page which results in the link juice being passed on.

Well done on the experiment and off course web directories should work, but that all depends on "which" directories you place your site too. Web directories categorize sites based on the niche of such sites, why would they be harmful. That's funny:)

Submitting to web directories is doubtless one of the easier ways of doing SEO. Personally, I do a few web directory submissions a week when I'm very busy and do not have time to write blog posts etc. It's like a joker in that sense, if you want. Just make sure that during periods when you don't have much time on your hands, some links still appear.

Thank you for this study. Few would have the discipline to stick with just directory submissions long enough to get results.
