I am submitting my site to directories manually, some I paid some are free, but I got no traffic from those directories, even I paid for feature listing, most of them with PR5 or over, so I am wondering is it worth that spend time and money to submit to those directories?

Another thing, most of this directory are accept free submit and there are huge volume of those ditrectory online, how can they make profit ? it no profit, just wondering how much effort the owner will spend to promote the directories ? I don't think they set up directory just for fun.;)

The quality paid directories are well managed with sustainable support and marketing programs

Quality paid directories when affordable (ie in your budget) offer great value

Traffic from directories is usually limited but neverless offers focused traffic, and if it converts it covers the ROI :)

I guess it’s a better way for new sites with low PR. Almost most of the directory links are cached. It’s another way to fetch backlinks for a website. But if your site already has PR5 or PR6 then these listings will not affect your present PR or SERPs much, and may not be worth the money.

BTW, try finding out link partners. Simply send them a link exchange request. I guess there are many, who do not mind and love to list good websites. And this would help your site to get targeted traffic.

First the easy to answer question - yes, people can and do make money from their directories - it does take time and hard work. Unfortunately, with most things where people can make money there are many who think directories are quick and easy money producers - they quickly learn the truth and either abandon the sites or sell them. So, in the coming weeks and months some of the directories you took your time and unfortunately money to submit to will not longer be online. The good news is that many of the directories will remain online and as they grow, so will the value of having a link on it.

    Now to your other questions...

Traffic - for the most part general directories will bring very little traffic to your website(s). I would strongly recommend that you look for niche directories to add to your list of sites to submit to. Niche directories can and do rank fairly well for their topics on the search engines and can provide targeted traffic to the sites listed. The top 10 sites on my niche site had recieved almost 1500 click-throughs prior to my needing to take it temporarily down.

Why Submit - The core value of submitting to directories is SEO. Simple as that. The more links to your site(s) the better you'll rank in the search engines. The power of directory links is that you choose your own link text (within the directory's guidelines) and can quickly impact how your site(s) rank for those terms. Additionally, directory submission is one of the best ways to get the search engines to spider a new site - particularly when the directory allows deep links.

Why pay for featured listings? - featured listings will keep you at the top of the category. This is most valuable when the directory has PR on their inner pages as the first page of a category almost always will have a higher PR than any pages that follow.

Directories are tools for free backlinks most of the time, i submit to directories not for traffic but for backlink.

It's worth being listed even without getting traffic you get a decent backlink with anchor text most of the time helping your site rank higher in search engines so you do get traffic be indirectly.

I wouldn't be bothered if i got no traffic from directories:D

This is definitely the wrong attitude. Or maybe you don't understand the relevance of a good quality bunch of backlinks. If so, you will definitely be wallowing in self-pity very shortly.

I couldnt have said better ;)

I sometimes wonder why people look to us as "advertising portals" when we are not... unless like what was said about niche the it becomes different.

Most directories traffic is derived from other webmasters seeking to gain a link back from a powerful source.

    thx
