Software is a part that can be created via web.

Web development is like designing and development of a website using php, joomla, drupal. If we go broad then eCommerce Solutions with benefits of shopping cart and more.

Whereas software developers are those who develop software that can be an eCommerce software or CRM or ERP or business analytics or business intelligence for any kind of business.

Now, its up to your interest on which area you can do better.

I agree with ankil. It depends on you, your interests, your skills and your dedication to the job.

However I am seeing more and more a strong shift to web based software. Companies simply can't afford updating loads of different computers when a new software version comes out.

So I would opt for web based programming as this will be the future in opinion. I would choose to look into php, .net and java and maybe jsp. that way you have broad skills and you can work on loads of different projects and jobs.

Desktop tools are dead - everything will be in the cloud/web in near future. Even Desktop Widgets will work with Javascript and HTML5 + CSS3 in Windows 8. So i would improve my skills in web development.

Dude, how can desktop tools be dead when web tools rely on a desktop tool to work - a browser? :p

I do get where you're coming from though. Web apps will definitely evolve in the future to come and I think it's a more fun field to enter into - web development that is.

Oh yea OP, a web developer IS a software developer also. I think your topic should be more like web app developer vs desktop app developer.

lol stop trolling by asking about the "best" programming language.

btt: Lets say webdeveloper are becoming software developer more and more in these days because with new features like web storage [HTML5] and so on your are able to develop online tools that are equivalent to desktop tools. They dont even need a connection to work. Yeah shiny future :D

I believe that a lot is moving toward "Software as a Service", but web design is getting easier and easier for everyday people to do. So I don't see design being a huge money-maker, but I do see backend CUSTOM coding being stable.

Web Development wont get easier in my oppinion. Yeah there are cool new feature for example border-radius and animations in CSS which safe you a lot of time but on the other Hand things are moving forward very fast. A few years ago dynamic pages generated by e.g. php have been state of the art - today this is the peak of the iceberg. AJAX , thousands of APIs from external services, HTML5 stuff like Drag & Drop .... and so on are everyday business.

So it may be easier if you stick by coding boring Business Homepages etc. If you go for gold there is a lot to learn out there.

being a software developer will give you more knowledge and it's easy to transfer the skill set to the web. Also I agree, you will always need hardware/desktop software, someone has to program the operating system, the browser, the chip in the phone, the drivers for the touch screen...so people can then "web develop" their crap

I am both a software & web developer and quite often I have to write my own "desktop" based little utilities to help me implement web stuff quickly (and cheaply) and I don't have to rely on other services each time I need something simple....for example few days ago I needed to generate thumbnails of 5000 websites, all I had was a database with urls. It took me 30 minutes to write the program that will do that automatically and it was happily capturing, cropping, saving and uploading whilst I was pottering with in the garden with my tomatoes....

Being a software developer is the cornerstone of everything.

Look evaalice9, both the professions are best at their places and lucrative too but obviously, you should choose the one you find interest in. Both the professions are equally money-making but yes, software development is little challenging job coz it involves logical coding and in-depth knowledge of the platform you work on. I would prefer software development if you are more techie. Best of luck.

Both have a good future. PHP is a web development language. PHP is good for developing websites.

Some companies (I won't name names) pay as much as 600k for software developers. I've never seen that much for even a good web 2.0 app developer. (BTW, a web developer is a software developer. Websites are software.)

It doesn't work like that. I can develop a web app in PHP and I can develop a desktop app in PHP. Javascript is used only in web development.

Since they're programming languages, yes. (Some languages are more complex than others, but it has nothing to do with whether they're used to develop web apps or desktop apps.) Most lanmguages are easy to learn once you've learned programming. Most languages are anywhere from very difficult to impossible to learn if you haven't learned programming. (Learning a programming language isn't learning programming.)

Hey it all depends on your personal interest whether you are interested in software development or web development. Both have bright future if you are good enough in them. Ya nowadays Php is more demanding & it is web development & also easy to learn & work. It works on java script.
