Alright, the title says it all i am opening a web development company and site where i come from range from 500$ personal sites to 2000$ basic company sites I got the skills- knowledge and a fellow engineer and another business graduate are all partners... we are 3 people .... I dont know where to start ? Any ideas?
You can start by building a site for your company and make sure its a top quality design and coded to perfection. Thats the first most important thing that I call the bait. When people see that your site is great they will want the same and where do they look for / someone to make their site look like yours? daa, your providing the service. After that it would be advertising and good customer service/support. People usually start slow but when the you gain reputability and strong relationship with your customer you'll find that people come to you by themselves. Also for this type of service don't try to outwork yourself to get natural traffic via keywords like web design / web designer though you may try to target your local search engine. I would recommend manual advertisement and continue to build on the momentum after that. There are plenty of ways to do it such as via forums, social networks or even from mount to mouth advertising. Spread the words with your friends and colleagues first.. You'll be surprised how much a mass SMS to friends about your new service can help your start up biz.eg "Hi everyone, I am starting a new biz to make fab sites online, my site is example.com, if anyone needs their site to be done do please refer to me. May I know what Technology you guys are specialized and what types of websites you are specialized with and do you have a designer in your team?
Networking is huge in the web design business. Referrals are essential. Join the local chamber of commerce, and see if they'll publish some content for you in their newsletters. This one was huge for us - partner up with local computer stores. People go in there and ask for websites all the time. We had one who sent us all the people who asked about a website, and boy did they send us a lot of customers. Also, work on your upselling skills. It's easy to turn a $2000 website into a $3000-$4000 website by upselling Internet Marketing and premium features. Be sure to build in an hourly rate for updates, there's huge money in after sale updates.
