How good is the web design market targetting small businesses. Im looking to start off one of these in my local area. Good idea? And also, how would I go about promoting the business with a fairly low budget. (I am still a student). This information would be great. cheers, pr0xy.
Its very competitive online to get good rankings under popular search engine web design phrases. Perhaps you should consider offline marketing such as calling local businesses with no internet presence and offering your service with a good sales pitch.
I would try to work on the local market, though alot of designers seem to not like local clients. One great way you can attempt to contend in the SE's is by providing templates (wordpress, bulletin board, etc) with a link on them
Thats what im saying , target local businesses. I realise that online clients are too rare for a freelancer.
There is a lot of competition around, so be prepared for some hard times initially. Targeting local businesses is a good idea - provided you live in an area that has lot of commercial establishments around. Specialization can also benefit you a lot. One of my friends concentrates on Real Estate and Educational Institutions' sites. Once you have a good grip over a particular niche, you will find it lot easier to convince customers.
Yeah ok. This is my plan. I advertise the business (not sure how, maybe phone calls). Then I forward them to my website where they can make an online purchase throught an automated system. I make the desired site, host it on a very reliable host and then email them telling them the process is complete.
No. Your process is too automated. The point of a local business going with a local web designer is they can meet with the designer, go over ideas / plans, and have a much more personal experience. With your process, all of that is cut out. Now whats to stop them from going to GAF and getting a website for $50? Id also suggest yellow page advertising and newspaper advertising.
