    Hi there

I ahve seen on a few websites including Digitalpoint a little icon in the address bar of a website. I have two questions

    1) IS it practical to have one

    2) How difficult are they to make and install

    thanks guys

    It helps brand your site.

It's easy to create and add to your site.

Just make a 16x16 image or have someone do it for you, and then you just have to upload the file to your server and add a line of code to your page.

    P.S. It's called a favicon. :)

Yeah, type 'Favicon Creator' in Google.
There are loads of free websites that will allow you to upload an image you want, then the website will scale it to the proper dimensions and work the rest of their magic :)

Yeah use a "Favicon Creator" to create a 16x16 image. It will have a ".ico" file extention.

    Name it favicon.ico

Upload it to the root directory of your website.

    maybe refresh your cache..

    Should be all set.

Because of course there's software that would actually use that... OH WAIT, no there isn't! Favicons are 16x16, you make bigger it's not going to display properly in most cases - though being an ICO file you could embed multiple sizes and color depths, just be sure to include a 16x16 in the file since that's what 99.9999999999% of programs that will display it expect to see.

As to having one or not - They are increasingly important as browsers start to make use of them... See opera, where you can drag and drop them onto your toolbars to make quicklaunch buttons (which I use instead of bookmarking on my more frequently accessed sites)
