I see nothing "grey" about spamming online forums and communities. I own a popular forum and spend hours every week deleting SPAM and moderating new users to try to stop the flow of this kind of crap.

In the end, people who use these types of techniques to advertise products and services are seen in the same light as the low life Viagra and Stock market email spammers flooding inboxes everywhere.

Nope, we don't follow forums TOS. That's why our service is grey hat. We follow the law, but we do not follow the forums Terms of Service. If we followed both, it would be a white hat service. If we broke the law and the TOS, it would be a black hat service.
