A SOAP key can be used differently- For example I use mine in the digital point service that allow you to check search engine ranking- AJAX key doesn't work....
I also would like to buy a SOAP API key. But two things ... first off, I always thought that they were registered to a google user-name (like a Gmail account or something). Second thing, how do you know the seller isn't scamming you and just selling the same key to dozens of people ... or maybe even not selling a valid key. Is there some sort of escrow way of doing this, or does the buyer just have to trust?

Why don't you try AJAX API. Its free and it has all like back link count, indexed pages count, PR.... and everything you can do with SOAP API.
