and not for the link popularity.

Directory experts from the video on ShoeMoney's myspace seems to suggest that.

Very interesting video check it out.

That's what I first thought about directories, but in the real world users decide the main purpose for them. Since many users are not from the general public and most directories don't get much traffic from the general population the purpose of the directory has changed.

In reality there is misconception about directory. When we hear/read "directory" we should think they were created for website owners and not for the general public.

I notice Shoemoney talks about the loss of Zeal back in March. Just how old is that podcast?

Although it's right about the proliferation of new directories, the advice to go to them for direct traffic is way out. Directories will boost your traffic almost wholly via search engines. So to decide whether to list in them largely due to the direct traffic they send is outdated advice.

OK Gyro it is!!, If I could only send it through the net.

Seriously though, I just wanted your opinion on this since some people seem to praise ShoeMoney and his ideas, and he is looked at like some sort of Authority.

I did not want to waste anyone's time!! Sorry!

If people are submitting to directories for the purpose of traffic then I am afraid that they will be disappointed. If people want traffic to their website then they need to do some advertising, like adwords, or buy banner space on sites were people are most likely to click on the link and check out their site. Or better yet, optimize their site so that they can rank under phrases that are relevant to what they do.

99% of the time people that are looking to buy products or anything else are not going to a use directories. Think about it, if I am looking for information about how to fix my roof why would I look in a directory for that information.

Directories imo are only for link popularity and page rank.

Yup. people go to directories to submit and check out the compitition. Not to find sites to visit.

No offence to Shoemoney, i dont know the guy, but i dont think that its a good idea to follow another webmaster like their a guru or something, im not saying that anyone is doing that either, i just dont believe in getting caught up with web celebs, im not having a dig at anyone either, i know the guy is successful as are others like him.

No worries, I in fact did order one yesterday hahaha
however not as authentic, it will just have to suffice. ;)

The suggestion wasn't bad at all, it was just his presentation. I guess it was a failure from a comical standpoint.(if it was suppose to be at all, i dunno)

p.s. dry ice the gyro :D

I did some directory submission, but I didn't see any traffic from it. For link building, I think it will be ok.

I think it's easy to get carried away with the fact that he made a lot of money, and equate that with him knowing all there is to know about the web. He made money with ringtone sites. Does he even own a directory? I don't think there's much you can say about changes in the directory world unless you're looking at it from both sides.

The only directory that brought me traffic was and is yahoo. But not much though...30+ uniques/month or something like that. I submit to directories JUST for link building, cos I know they don't bring traffic (I mean general directories). Niche directories, however, brought me some traffic.

    I like niche directories :)
One of my favorite is http://www.bigfreeguide.com/camping/
They really put an effort to attract and make it usefull for real users, and not just search engines.

I do visit general directories, but for 1 purpose only.
    To submit my site :D

Visit the latest google blog for webmaster : http://www.google.com/webmasters/
    It is nice reading.

Yes, but what's the difference really? I mean a general directory is just a bunch of niche directories...

The traffic from directory really depends on your website too, for example I run a directory, and I have some website that have gotten over 140 visits in 6 months, but some other website has only gotten 2 visit in 8 months. But if you submit to enough well promoted directory you can get decent traffic.
