During my tour of the ECS factory in China I noticed that most of the workers were women. I asked the male plant manager why there are so many women working here compared to men. His answer, and I quote, was “We hire women because they’re easier to control.†ECS is run military style with strict rules and regulations. In the above photo you can see a male manger reading the rules to a group of new female employees. The company provides dormitory housing and food for the workers. A grape system is used to reward and punish them. A green grape means the worker is performing to accepted standards, a red grape means they’re not. Get enough green grapes and you get a reward, like being on a line where you can sit down. Get enough red grapes and you’ll find yourself on the street. You can get a red grape for infractions such as talking on the job or coming back to your dorm late. Outside of work, there really isn’t much to do. The plant is huge and the only thing nearby are other manufacturing plants. ECS workers are paid an average of 1000RMB per month ($100US), or about the price of one ECS motherboard. The ECSM plant has 11,000 workers pumping out 2.5 million motherboards a month. Out of that 2.5 million, 11,000 goes to employee wages. That gives ECS a productivity ratio that no American manufacturer can ever hope to match. I asked the plant manager how many shifts ECSM runs on. He told me two. I then had the following conversion. Me: “Oh, so that means this plant shuts down part of the time?†Plant Manager: “No, we run 24 hours a day.†Me: “But you said you only have two shifts.†Plant Manager: “That is correct, two 12 hour shifts.†Me to myslf: “Welcome to China.â€
Hospitals run 2 shifts so there's nothing wrong with that. The rest - oh yes, plenty wrong. However the multinationals bring rewards with their exploitation and the people who want them out of those countries can't see the economic reality of where they have come from and where they might be without them. There is no easy solution.
I'd pay almost all of the women in that picture $100 just for 2 hours with me. 360hrs per month making motherboards? They're in the wrong business. Pete
Yeah, I'm sure they're aware that they could be objectified by disgusting old men. Oddly, making motherboards in 12 hour shifts probably seems more dignified. Go figure!
Not everyone has to work like this though, there are some very cushy jobs in China. My uncle helped develop the hydrogen bomb, retired at 40 and lives on a government estate...it's extremely nice shall I say. However, you had better believe if the US didn't have unions and worker protection laws they'd be doing this as well
The irony being, a punter wouldn't exploit them to the level of their plant manager and company. I have worked 12 hour shifts stuffing credit cards in to envelopes for far more money then these workers (but still minimum wage and not enough to live on, it's all relative isn't it) and believe me, if someone asked me to suck their dick and take the rest of the month off, I would of been on my knees in an instant. I know what my times worth! Pete
ECS in not a sweat shop. The line actually moves quite slowly. It has to. If it moves too fast, the employees would be making mistakes and ECS wouldn't be able to get 99.3% efficiency out of their motherboards. As for making $100US a month, that is the market rate in the Special Economic Zones. It is consider a good wage as well. Most of the girls come from farming villages where they make a lot less than that. The company pays for food, housing and uniforms. And since there is really no place to go and spend your money the girls can literally save 100% of what they make. Most send the money (all of it) back home to help their families. One family was able to build a new house from the money their daughters sent home. Some of the girls will save part of the money for themselves, to be used for getting an education or starting a business. I was unable to interview any of the girls because they’re not allowed to talk to “VIPs.†There is a huge class system in China. Yes there is a class system everywhere but it’s taken to extremes in China. When I was walking around the ECS grounds, security saluted me when I walked by and other employees stop and bow their heads. While in the city this class system ran rampant. People are divided into high class, middle class or no class. Female “greeters†are used at the doors of a business to show what kind of establishment it is. A business with six greeters at the door means locals can’t afford to buy here, unless that local is middle to high class. There is a huge gap in pay between middle and no class. A person with an education and who can speak English can easily land a job that pays him $35,000US a year plus housing expenses. That’s almost 30 times more than the average factory worker. And it is for this reason that many Chinese who study in America choose to go back to China to work. There is no way one can make 30X the wage of a US factory worker in a middle manager’s job. But that is the reality in China. Many North Americans choose to work in China for this reason. You can make $35,000 here and be barely above the poverty line. However, make that much in China and you’ll be living large.
What people don't think about is what that $100 a month actually means. The way he came about with that $100 a month is the government mandated exchange rate (not free market) and also the government only allows a small amount of currency to be exchanged. The government in China takes care of all their basic needs (food, housing, clothing, entertainment, health, retirement, insurance, etc.) and so that $100 a month is actually a nice chunk of change for someone with no experience or education. Try to think about things a little bit more deeply next time before you go and make the obvious declarations.
ECS is not a government own company. In fact it's not even a Chinese company. It's publicly traded company from Taiwan. But your assessment is correct. The company takes care of all the employee needs so the $100 they make is pure profit, so of speak. When you think about that, those girls are actually do better than many Americans. How may people do you know who runs out of money before they run out of days in the month?
Now all I have to do is find a bunch of "like-minded" prospective female employees and I'll be a happy camper.
I'm about to start hiring cheap Asian women for things I need done...and...services, if you know what I mean.
You won't need $100. You can have them for $15 to $20. Well not those girls in the pictures but there are many girls in the city who will help you out. ECS put us up in a 5 star hotel, but it was surrounded by hookers. The girls are not allowed to go after you on the hotel grounds but once you walk onto the street, they're all over you. I had this conversion more than once. Guy on street: "Hey! Want DVDs?" Me: "No." Guy pointing to girl: "Want sex?" Me: "Hmmm."
Once you go Asian, you won't go back to any other ethnicity. Trust me - they treat their men like royalty if you can satisfy their desires (yeah THAT
You guys are disgusting. Plus this thread is now hijacked. If you want to discuss this any further go bump this thread: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=68523
I had a manufacturing manager tell me the reason they hire women to work in factories in the USA is because: They show up everyday! They don't bitch like white boys do! They do their jobs better and faster! They get along better and are more productive! So a white boy better go to school because the Mexicans are taking all the construction jobs and the women all the factory jobs, leaving alcoholism to the poor uneducated white man!
Or the white boys could learn to * show up everyday * stop bitching * do their jobs well * get along with each other
Thiis true, employees receive care packages every month!! Free (huge boxes mind you) drinks, food, fresh fruit, fish, meat, etc
