We are runing a google adwords campaign but are unable to track sales

We can track all the keywords used to enter the site with analytics and live person. We can also track as far as checkout but then the whole thing falls down. We are using google checkout and paypal for payments, if people drop out at the checkout stage it creates a problem with true tracking results.
We need to know which keywords are converting to sales, also we want to begin an affiliate programme which we cannot do until we can track all the way to completed sales.
If anyone has any suggestions as to how we can resolve this I would be grateful.

put the conversion code on the thank you page after the sale is completed. This should solve your problem unless you do not have a thank you page... In that case, I recommend getting one.

One of the problems we have is that we use google checkout more than any other payment gateway. Once the customer has left our site and paid we don't seem to be able to get an auto re-direct to a page of our choice, which of course would be a thank you page. If anyone has any ideas please let me know

How does your shopping cart script detect payment if the payment processor doesn't send a call back signal to your script ?

If the script receives call back then you are for sure add a thank you page to the script.

Read more about the shopping cart you are using and read more about Google checkout.

I never used Google checkout myself. but the call back exists in paypal, 2checkout and moneybookers which I have used.

Google checkout have an API call back but trying to find a way to get this to work for us is extemely difficult. The way I understand how the API call back works is that if it doesn't get a response within 5 seconds from us we get this message "We've made several unsuccessful attempts to send order notifications to your notification callback URL, ecompayments.monstercommerce.com/Google.aspx As a result, you aren't receiving order status, risk, or other notifications."
Having said that we could count those in as sales because that message is only sent after a competed sale. Our main problem is that we cannot find a way to get google checkout return to a page of our choice (thank you page) after the purchase is completed if we could get it to do that we would be almost there.

We are using network solutions shopping cart.
I really need to find an answer to this as it stopping us rolling out an affiliate programe and we cannot track sales from keywords.
I am not sure but I thing the problem lies with the google checkout and we don't sem to be able to get any help from them, if we could have the customer automatically directed to a thank you page after purchase this would be the answer.
The API call back is another issue between google checkout and network solutions apparently there is only a 5 second window for this to be accepted so get lots of failed API call backs, thankfully this is after purchase.

I wish it were that simple.
We only sell in the US we have a US company with US Bank account but we are based in the UK.
The perfect solution for us would be to have our own merchant account but nobody will give us one without a US social security number which we don't have.
We cannot use the merchant account we have in the UK as they will not process US Dollars.
So for the time being we are stuck with Google and Paypal and need to try to find a way to track keywords through to sales.

if your using Google and paypal as checkout options, both have the ability to redirect back to your own custom thank you page. You need to do some reading or consult with a professional.

Set up a Goal in Google Analytics and You can follow exactly which keyword is bringing You the sale. The Goal should be set up on the "after payment page=thank you page". When someone is arriving to that page than the Goal is done. Afterwards You can see which keywords, websites (or any other details) brought You the sale.

so after reading that artcle, perhaps you can put the conversion code in the confirmation email. Then when they read the email that confirms their order it will also show a conversion in your google adwords account...

    Just a though

The problem we are having is, after a purchase is completed we cannot get google to direct the customer back to a page of our choice i.e. thank you page.
So whent he purchase is completed they stay with google or navigate back to any page on our site.

The e-mail may be a good idea, I will have to speak to support about it as we don't put the conversion code in to our web site.
The way Network Solutions have this set up is simple, all we do is put in our Google Analytics account number and the cart installs the code in all the necessary pages.
