How does anyone know for sure they predicted the end of the world? I thought that date was just the end of the Mayan calendar.
It is the end of the mayan calender because of what they predicted would happen. the world would flood according to them and the world would go haywire. I think it was the end of the calender for a reason. nobody would live past then. and science says that if the earth does go haywire its because the north poles will change. alaska would be in the equator and most of the world would flood and places like europe would be the new arctic and every continent would have frequent earth quakes because the world would be basically twisted inside and need to adjust to the changes.

The Mayans arent extinct. There are still a couple hundred living today still following Mayan Traditions and calendar.
There's lots of misconceptions about the mayan calendar and what they actually meant by the "end of the world". They actually meant the "end of the calendar". Historians and scientists believe that they predicted the day in which we will stop using calendars. This basically means a "change of consciousnesses" where all humans (and animals too I guess) will function differently because of our exponential growth and development. The idea is that the Mayans weren't fortune tellers or magicians. They coudn't tell the future all they did was examine a pattern of human existence and determine when information/thought/events will happen so fast (in the abstract sense) that we will no longer be able to catch up and will need to drastically change our method of living or die (where the end-of-the-world myth came in). I'm not 100% sure on all of this or 100% believe it, just being a messenger. There's a couple lectures floating around on the net about this, I could try to find them if anyone is interested.
