Have you tried study into longtail social network keywords that could send you targeted traffic? You then can optimize for such keywords which I think will give you a lot of benefit in a long term =)

If this social network offers something unique or is related to a particular industry then consider sending out some press releases to trade publications.
You can do social media optimization like invite friends of social network and define benefits how is this important for others. Its slow process but work like ayurvedic medicines.
Write 20 articles based on keyword research and spin your articles 10 times or so. You should have 200 articles at this point.... you can do this in 10-15 hours. Social networks are like camp fires they start small and will only catch fire if the flame grows without going out. You need members for new members to feel comfortable joining it. I would focus on manually adding profiles or paying people to join at first as beta testers. The more people the better the chance it will take off. I think one of the best ways to advertise a social network is with another social network. For example, suppose you're a member of Yuwie where you get paid for every activity that goes on: page views, looking and people's profiles, etc. So you write this great blog content about the 5 Top Advantages of Social Networks. Well, you can always join another Social network and let people know about the article you wrote in your first one. So it starts the linking process. You may also want to consider joining get paid to write sites like Bukisa, Associated COntent, Info Barrell, Triond, Helium, Flixia, Xomba, Yuwie, Zenzuu, etc. So if you're offering advice, you still linking back to one of these others that leads to your social networking site. It's like drawing in people from different areas to the areas you want to go into.
