Ways to persuade my parents...

Hi, im 16 years old and i want some freedom! Ive decided it would be a good idea to buy a moped. But they have both been bought up with parents saying no to motorbikes/moped's. Its a pretty firm "no". I really want a moped especially as college is coming up and i will have to catch 2 buses.

Any tips on how to persuade them? Thanks in advance. :D

Work out how much busfair is going to cost you over a year and show them the figure. Personally I say just wait for a car if you will be in the position to buy one.

Well, im 17 this year (september) but its the cost! I can get a nice moped for like £700 ($1400) which will do 100 miles/gallon.

Scooters tend to have a habbit of being stolen though, or maybe that is only in the north east. Pretty much all my friends who have had one have had it stolen atleast once. Granted that may be a little down to their chosen places to park, but some of them have been nicked out of back gardens. Unless you have somewhere secure to store it I really wouldn't look in to it any further.

    PS. Steering locks don't work.

Try to tell them the advantages:

    * You will save commuting time which you can invest in studies (don't lie :D )
    * It will be much convenient for you.
    * Any other advantage that comes to your mind.

You can also try to make some money online and contribute towards the expenses (but I am not sure if your parents are saying "no" because of money or if they think that mopeds are not safe)

    Best of luck! ;)

Buy a pocket bike, known as minimoto's in the UK. Ton of fun but can only be used on race tracks or car parks :)

So, that can be even a bigger problem than the cost. Cost can still be managed but it will take a lot of persuasion if they have such opinion. Keep trying, you might get lucky! :)

Tell them if they don't let you have a scooter you will end up with so much repressed frustration that as soon as you hit 21 you will probably just go out and get a 1000cc superbike and end up in an accident because you had no previouse riding experience due to not being allowed to start small. Do they really want that on their conscience?

I personally wouldn't want one though I used to have a CBR400rr much faster :)

p.s. with regards to security, get a big chain AND a disc-lock (just remember to take the disc-lock off before you ride it away)

Your 16, you can make your own decisions legally now.
Although they can also kick you out the house legally, so might not be the best of ideas to piss them off.

Honestly, just keep nagging them about it, if they think it's dangerous then not much will convince them otherwise. They don't go fast, they arn't really that dangerous.

If they are worried about the danger, and you think a car is too expensive.....

Get them to buy you your car :)

    Worth a shot i'd say.

That's what I would say. If they're not giving you any freedom, let them buy you a car. :p

Yeah definitely save up for a car! That money you would spend on a Moped could easily help you be one of the first in your friends to take lessons and get a car! That means you can charge them for lifts! So you can get the money back!

    Good luck!
