Well I would start with some Do Follow blog backlinks then focus on related backlinks in your particular niche!
Use the general marketing such as blog/ forum comment, buy link from high pr site, submit article to article directly, submit link to link directory. Then you will get much benefit from it.
I believe that you will find that the link exchanges will not help very much......In the case of the big G...they like incoming links a lot more that reciprocal links....
Using softwares like SeNuke, MagicSubmitter and SEOLinkVine can also help you to get links fast. But be aware for you still have to work your way to build links for your site.
