Way to install WordPress once for many domains??

I am creating a bunch of different web sites and am playing around with WordPress to see if there is a way to install it once and then have it present my various sites around that one install. Without having to reinstall it and keep it updated for every single different site that I may use it on.

    Is such a thing possible?

You know...kinda like installing a Windows program into the Program Files folder and having it access various files in different directories without having to install the program once into every single directory.

    Any input would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

If you have a dedicated machine with whcm you can push stuff without issue. I think I have a few minutes if you need a hand. If the domains are already in place then its a bit more of a linux issue(in terms of doing it that is)

Thanks Nigel. That's very gracious of you to offer to help.

I only have shared hosting. Not a dedicated machine.

It's not a big deal in the sense that I will not be deploying WordPress regardless but I was playing around with it and was curious if it could be done.

Am I correct in understanding that under a shared hosting environment the only choice one has is to install the full WordPress under each domain? Such that one must upgrade each and every install to keep it upgraded with the latest and best security patches and otherwise?

If that is so...that is one big, huge hassle...let me tell you.

You can do one install and access the same from different domains. However, you might face resource usage issues if you have big sites and few other issues.

If I need to do mass install, I will create one site and set all necessary parameters, install themes, plugins, etc. and will create a copy of that site, to others.

Yeah its a bit of a headache in your scenario. I would suggest you slipstream wordpress with everthing you need in it. Meaning, on your desktop go ahead and put all in one seo pack for instance, where it goes in the wordpress folder along with anything else you think you need and upload everything at once.

That will help save a bit of time. You can also use fantastico in your cpanel to install WP. That may be faster as well. You can one click install that stuff from your hosting panel.

    hope that helps,

So I take it then that in the final analysis, whether one installs WordPress manually into the directories of every hosted web site or installs it locally, zips it, and FTP's it over, that one MUST install a WordPress instance into every domain running a blog?

The only other option I have heard of is using something called WordPress MU (multi-user) but I believe you have to have server root privileges to properly install it if I am not mistaken. Which shared hosting customers do not have.

Again I am not looking to actually do this as I am developing a system of creating simple web sites that is far easier to use than WordPress. I am just investigating if a multi-blog domain, single installation of WordPress, is possible so that if it isn't I can add another selling point to my simple web site creation system.

It is fine installing WPMU on you shared hosting, as long as you install it on the root domain of the account. Really easy, as simple as noral wordpress tbh.

You'd like wpmu Im sure, you can make it as simple or complicated as you like for yourself and/or customers and end users. You can also use domain mapping plugins to use one install and many, individual domains.

You should be able to do this if your server has Fantastico installed...the only thing is that I don't know if it can install the same WP theme over and over.

Wordpress MU is a good choice. However, your hosting should support that. Second it will use huge CPU resource. So Big NO to shared hosting if you are going for Wordpress MU.

Just curious as to why you say it will take a huge CPU resource. Do you have any links to articles about this? I've got WPMU and haven't seen a problem with it on shared or dedicated hosting
