no one really knows, but you're not alone, many websites experienced huge drops in serps, including mine.

There are no pointers to be made. Google initiated what looked to be the major update of 2007 so far last Thursday. Many websites behaved just like your's. Apparently the Google Gods didn't like what they saw, and yanked it later in the day. The other possibility is that they inadvertantly dropped some filters. Trying to predict what G will do at any given time is a fools game.

Aside from having decent content, the only real game to play is getting the right links to your pages. In the final analysis, that's the only game. That way, you're ready when a genuine update finally takes place.

The fact that your site shot up in rankings, however briefly, could signify that you're doing a lot of things right.

Ive been working hard on gaining good backlinks, submitting to blogs etc and ensuring the pages are relevant, Its an online store so positioning for my keywords is vital, i am ranked high for very specific terms but my aim is to be top at google for that specific one. Msn is apalling, for the same keyword im in number 1 spot and its sending me no traffic lol.

I have been riding the Google roller coaster since the beginning of the year. My article site, ArticleOnRamp.com has been from 5% Google referrals to 86%. This has swung at least four times since the beginning of the year. My advice is to just ride it out and keep posting quality content and wait for the next upswing. I only sweat it because my Adsense suffers on the downturns.

yeah google is updating a lot of new stuff on their servers , so the out of sync datacenters are the cause for the drastic changes that you see
well at least that explains the random serp's

It's happened to me too, a couple of my top keywords were on page 2 and 3 last week, after a 7 month slog, and now not in the top 10.

I can only hope after the re-shuffle, if that's what's happening they come back higher.

This is something that no one can really explain (so far), i haven't notice these negative changes on my sites so far, actually on some of my sites i do see the ranking improve and organic traffic grow. The strange thing that has happened to me, is that in a relatively new site, with growing organic traffic, the backlinks that Google displays have vanished. The links have never appeared on the webmaster tool account, but many of the links would appear if you asked G for backlinks to the site (i.e. link:www.site.com) now, those backlinks won't appear even (they slowly vanished one by one). It makes me wonder on what exactly is going on..

Google last update was at the end of March

They have recently begun a rollback as the March update went to far and hurt a lot of sites when they devalued paid links and it seems they hit all links by mistake.

    For johnaspey

Being as your site is new, Google will give the site a high score and then pull it back.

Seeing the links you built so far such as at sitepoint and mostpopularsites, add-url etc are not relevant to your site the links built effect google till they can put the brakes on them.

Youre probably hurting yourself more than helping.

Also the SEO methodology you empolyed on your site is not helping matters.

One of the first indications to a search engine you are attempting to get to the front page is keyword stuffing in alt image text.

See google has a thing for people with obstacles to overcome others don't

So text to speech readers are used to tell people about a website. These programs read the alt image text to users with vision issues.

This also touchs on user interface but thats another post....the point is while the user wants to hear a bit about the site....they do not want to hear everyone of your keyword stuffed alt tags such as

alt="AR0619 Emporio Armani Leather Gents Chronograph Watch"></a>

The search engines frown on that type thing and as such will filter your site downwards.

Your page naming conventions also need to be looked at ;)
    Good luck!!

The alt image tags are descriptions of the product - ie what it is? Most backlinks i have are submitted directorys in either the jewellery section or watches, obviously there is gonna be a few where i have used my forum signature, but who doesnt? Whats the big difference between google and msn? why do they rank it number 1 yet google fluctuate all over the place? the fact it went to number 7 must say something.

I am fully aware of the purpose of alt image text (I own over 70 websites) and as well I also know when it is seen as spam and your website is one that falls in that category.

Again someone who cannot see or has vision impairments, does not want everyone of your alt tags on every page, read to them.

If you are in business to make sales you will heed the advice as these people will leave your site after being annoyed.

You can also take a quick look at Googles webmaster guidelines

    uality guidelines - basic principles
    • Make pages for users, not for search engines. Don't deceive your users or present different content to search engines than you display to users, which is commonly referred to as "cloaking."
    • Avoid tricks intended to improve search engine rankings. A good rule of thumb is whether you'd feel comfortable explaining what you've done to a website that competes with you. Another useful test is to ask, "Does this help my users? Would I do this if search engines didn't exist?"
    • Don't participate in link schemes designed to increase your site's ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or "bad neighborhoods" on the web, as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links.
I've bolded & italics the beginnings of each that pertains to you & your site.

Why does MSN not act like Google?

Does Starbucks work like the 7-11???

    No

Two different businesses (MSN is a portal, Google is a Search engine) two different methods of operation.

How on earth am i spamming people???????? I put a tag on the alt image tag so if highlighted they could see what model number the product is that they are looking at! If your saying that google doesnt like that fair enough - but i can sssure you that it is not purpose built spam.

I've the weirdest thing at my site, 2 page that used to get SERP from the same keywords (5st & 6st results) . The first (older) page doesn't on the top 100 while the second (newer) get the 5st place.
Can anyone explain that? (the text on both pages stayed the same)

Because that is what you are doing.

    Here is a simple exercise

Read all the alt images on your home page to yourself?

    Do you like it?

Do you think your impaired users would?

Next can the impaired users see?

alt="AR0619 Emporio Armani Leather Gents Chronograph Watch">

    A better one would be

    alt="mens watch image">
or if you must use a keyword

    alt="armani mens watch image">
