Thinking back to when I first started buying domains, I... 1. Bought lots & lots of domains I knew were really, really cool / valuable. 2. Waited patiently for the offers in the hundreds/thousands/millions to come in. 3. Began researching on how to "help" them sell, when point 2 above didn't seem to be happening for some odd reason. 4. Spent time following the advice I learned from point 3 - adding "for sale", listing on Sedo etc (while ignoring things relating to "accurate valuations") 5. Gradually, reluctantly, slowly, came to the unhappy conclusion that I'd spent money and time on things that no one else wanted to buy! Did anyone else learn things the hard way (or was it just me!)?
NO I never made such st.... mistake Instead 1. I bought ONE domain 2. started to work like crazy - day and nights soon 13 years - often 18+ hrs a day, many working days ended after far more than 30hrs of work. 3. Then I used all traditional old fashioned promotional methods like RSS feeds, onpage SEO, NEVER did link farming or link selling/buying - but remained old-fashioned traditional 4. from earnings I invested into improvements, new technology, top laptop to work, faster server, more servers for ONE site 5. as a result the site grew often thousand or more self created content pages per single year , leading to up to 1000+ of new uv per day after a year of steady creation / production and publishing old fashioned, traditional, conventional methods first work - then earn - the hard way ... a solid way to success .. funny such methods of buying many domains and earning without working, i.e. the easy modern way of life - that never even occurred in my mind at any time of life. why ? I LOVE to work and love to see natural growth as a result of real work. work makes strong the opposite - earning without real work - leads to our current and ongoing global economy crisis and collapse of society ... sooner or later!
hey pjb- no, you weren't the only one to do that. i have a nice little pile of "super cool" domains that will probably end up getting dropped at renewal time. i was absolutely convinced that if i reg'd "frigidb!tch.com" (one of the 1st i reg'd), that i would end up making a bundle off of it, as it was perfect for anything from a cold weather version of "burning man" to "extreme cold weather camping gear", or maybe the new refrig that would compete with subzero. i'm not a festival promoter, or a sleeping bag manufacturer, or an appliance maker, so instead, it just sits. it could be worse. we could be buying bad domain names from resellers at $50 each. that would be a very painful lesson. at least this way, we're getting that lesson for reg fee. all the best- michael
I remember a guy, an Irish, who bought a lots od domain with city names, like edimburgh.com, dublin.com, etc... And never find a buyer, ever... You know, the problem is people really believe that domain may worth thousands and there are the other who think differently. And they are way more in number. Recently, I needed a domain with the city name of Cape Coral in it. And as short as possible. All and everyone of them are taken. So I reg as close as it can get: 1capecoral.com And lots of people made that mistake like you. Just remember the toyota.com story... How much toyota.com worth? Zero, zip ,nada...why? because when the dude wrote toyota that they can have the domain for $5 million, they reg'ed buyatoyota.com and made sure that there will be an infringement using toyota.com. They got it for a symbolic $25 and the cost of a domain back then was $34.
Same here and look that I had premium domains that nobody bought and today are parked as "rare" "exclusive" and other terms that put them on the $xxxx - $xxxxx price range. However I got bored to keep waiting for a buyer after almost a decade
I made that mistake when I first started out, I made some good money on some domains, but lost tons on other ones. Overall I lost a couple hundred dollars.
I have done the same mistake. I am just looking for some person who will want to buy it from them . Anyone wishing to buy domains from me? Please PM me.
hmm.. I have never done this.. actually I am new to this field.. only three months old and earning 3$ per day from adsense.... I know its very less but when I started, I though that I will not be going to earn a single penny in 1st year because of so many good sites.. but the results are encouraging for me.... within three months of time my alexa weekly rank is around 1,60,000 and my daily page views are always 1000+ Lesson I have learnt is "Slow and Steady always wins the race. Don't chase the easy money, they never last long. "
Well. I have never made such mistakes, because i started off with a 0.00 investment and that made me think about everything i spend my money and time on!
Yes i am with you pjb but not in large quantity. i have selected best names and still have not find any buyers for my domains.
Heck yea I did this. I regged about 10 domains, all with absolutely ZERO value, but ones I thought were cool ... like FewKnow.com. Had all these ideas on what could be done with the domain, but tried to sell them for hundreds or thousands of dollars. I think out of the first ten I bought, the max I sold one for was $15.
