Was facebook only for class mates? How did they prevent others from joining?

If I understand correctly, facebook was originally just for people in a particular college or colleges. If so, how did they prevent others from joining?

    Thanks.

    Thanks for your response.

That sounds like something only teachers would have or school employees.

no, all students have student email. Mine wasn't an .edu because my university had a .ca domain but facebook had all this info when they launched - they worked with universities and colleges.

Is student email only for universities or do junior colleges have this too?

There are junior colleges that provide edu addresses.

I wonder if very many people in junior colleges had profiles on facebook before it opened up for everyone.

If you read a book called the accidental billionaire you will get a lot of info about how the whole process worked out with Mr. Zuckerman and FB.

No problem its a pretty good book written by the same guy that wrote bring down the house about the MIT students that took vegas for 10million+ off blackjack.
