To fix the problem I had with duplicate content, I started to 301 a bunch of urls to one url around the end of April. I started doing this for one specific directory “web” I had multiple domains, along with multiple sub domains, for the same content such as:

    http://domain. com/web/url.htm
    http://subdomain1.domain .com/web/url.htm
    http://web.domain. com/web/url.htm
    http://search.domain . com/web/url.htm
    http://www.example. com/web/url.htm
    http://example. com/web/url.htm

    so on and so on,

So.. I 301 all of them to http://www.domain .com/web/url.htm. There are about 9000 pages in this directory.

During this time, I noticed that more and more refers from Google where coming in on http://www.domain .com/web/url.htm and less on the other domain and our search engine placement was moving higher up, with quite a bit on the 1st page. Refers came off about 70% from the first page to around 80% from the first page in less than 3 weeks. Slow process, but working.

On Wednesday night, at 9pm, something happened… the amount of refers from Google tripled, from 1900 to over 5000 for the next three days. . I did a data center check and pages with the highest hits were ranked between position 1 and 5. Traffic went up, sales went up, and it was a nice weekend. On Sunday, at about 6pm, it dropped as fast as New York Yankee pitching. Refers went from 4900 on Sunday to 1700 on Monday. The urls I used to 301 everything to (http://www.domain .com/web/url.htm) is listed in Google and not in supplements, but are not even on the top 100.

Now the urls that I were 301 ‘ing are bring have more refers to our site.

    Any thoughts?
