Also note your notification email simply asks for an ID verification.

It doesn't tell me that you are redirecting my hits to your spammy ad page.
Being an email it wasn't going to be seen until I went online too. You had my mobile phone number - I answer that 24/7 too.

    To everyone else here:
Now you have a verification of my story, would you like to comment on the action taken by hostgator. Hostgator appears to claim they were reasonable. I claim there action was totally unacceptable [they should and could have left my pages visible whilst ID was verified].

    Any opinions?

ETA: I do not question their request to verify ID. I question their need to suspend display of my pages and show spammy ads instead - same content as now available and content that hostgator seems to accept is accptable.

An alternative question is how would you react if they did this to your site?

I understand Hostgator in this case, BUT:

Hostgator should not have given access to cPanel before they know everything is right.

And its very bad that Hostgator dont automatic give an notice that an account is suspended. It takes 10 seconds to send an standarized email to the web master.

    Else hostgator is good.

    DING!.

I run a web hosting company myself and we monitor for all sorts of activity and the most important is the initial sign up.

You will find spammers run a bot to setup an account with a company spam out until it is shut off. Russian "cracker jack" packages have made this extremely easy even for the novice.

So really think HostGator was at fault in letting this guy setup his account prior to validation.

Had they dispatched a simple email stating his domain term was invalid or there was some sort of issue it could have been addressed prior to the "go live" date.

I have worked for many people who use host gator and I have administered their sites without issue. I understand the point of "offshore" anything but again don't judge a book by it's cover.

R&D is so overlooked in many companies but particularly in the IT industry for some odd reason.

Thanks for the first agreement on here that my complaoint is valid.

The fact other people are doing bad things does not ustify the way hostgator behaved.

I did absolutely nothing wrong. My pages were hijacked by the hosting company with no valid reason. At best they had an excuse to ask for ID verification BEFORE ALLOWING setup and encouraging me to switch my nameserver records.

A hosting company should never do that and I will judge one that does permanently and immediately. This is not judging by the cover, it's judging someone by their actions.

I would like to see a world where any hosting company doing that once causes them a major problem such that every other hosting company makes sure that they do not treat any customer that way in future. Such behaviour should not be acceptable ever! Looks like I am in a minority here.
