I think this is very difficult to prove and I don't think this test was done very scientifically, it could have been other low quality links or breaches of G's rules that led to the bad showing.

Also the age-old argument against low quality links hurting rankings is that anyone could spend a couple hundred bucks and buy crappy links for the competition and sink them.

My personal opinion is that G looks at the entire backlink profile of a webstie and then they have auto triggers and human intervention based on that.

What is happen to me is:
if I am not post to some forum for 2 weeks (exactly no post), then my site visits drop about 30%-50%.
The rest is come from search engines.

Perhaps this is Djingel means by short terms.

Yah I just don't see how it would make sense. I mean I could understand them devaluing your forum sig links but why would they give penalties?

Usually with links you don't really see panalties you just see thhem get devalued. Your gonna need better proof.

Look at my forum signature. One link is to my blog with the anchor "stock market". Now, do a search in Google for stock market (no quotes). That blog is on the second page (granted, at the bottom of the second page). If that is punishment for using forum signatures all I can say is Google can give me some more punishment!!

Oh yeah guys and placing your link in directories is also bad in the long run.....

See I just made a statement like you do I have proof? no. Do you? no.

The fact is that people can say anything doesn't make them true it's believable but just think about it for a second if google punished you for forum links then howcome everyone at DP still does and we're talking about noobs-experts in SEO? is it that we're all retarded and you're the only one who figured it out?

I think this is absurd. Short-term or long-term, Link is important for Google to list you in their results.

I'll be back with you guys soon on this. I do respect and agree that you need some decent proof on this before believing. If anyone wants to help researching this, pls pm. I must say I am a bit disappointed with the way people are reacting here... If I am wrong...if... there are some much more professional ways to point this out to me.

    regards

About the link age thing, this is exactely what the patent says:

    29. The method of claim 26, wherein the scoring the document includes: determining an age of each link pointing to the document, determining an age distribution associated with the links based on the ages of the links, and scoring the document based, at least in part, on the age distribution associated with the links.

I would like to see that patent. If you know the information, please post the references that you are relating to. Otherwise, I think you made that up.

The only reason the links are "short term" is because you see more traffic from forum signatures when you post in a popular topic and hundreds of other people see the link all day. When the link dies off and sits deep in the forum, it's not a link that will be held against you, it's simply not being seen. As far as Google holding these links negatively, I am 99.99% positive that this is complete and utter crap. Here's why,

Many fans of large gaming sites will post links to their favorite sites. Ask yourself how many kids have a link to Newgrounds.com or Kongregate.com in their forum signatures? Tons do, and it wouldn't be fair for fans of a site to penalize the site owners. If Google even cares about forum signatures, they definitely don't look at them negatively, they would simply not count them at all and they would remain neutral.

Do some more ground work. I totally agree with Prince_Porter if google did not like it, they would just not follow it rather than taking them negatively.
