War with Iran...inevitable?

Discussion in 'Politics & Religion' started by Spoiltdiva, Feb 3, 2012.

Iran's supreme leader Khamenei,in a rambling 2 hour speech today, said that if the U.S. proceeds militarily against Iran that it would damage the U.S. "10 times over".
He also said that Iran would give the green light to Teheran's proxy force,Lebanon's Islamic militant group Hezbollah to wreak havoc on Israel.
Ehud Barak of Israel suggested also in a speech a few days ago that Israel could strike Iran as early as this spring/summer.Added to that U.S. defense secratery Leon Panetta said today that all options are on the table.

I believe the flashpoint will be from the Strait of Hormuz this month when Iran's Revolutionary Gaurd does their planned naval manoeveurs.
I believe the writing is on the wall here and unless the situation changes war is coming..........What say you,do you think Iran is developing a nuclear bomb, and should the U.S. and Israel proceed with force? Is war with Iran inevitable?

If Iran has been developing the bomb then I reckon they already have the bomb since 1992, and know how to use it. Any stupid attempt by Israel to attack Iran will result in a bombardment of oil wells in the region, a blockade of the straight, and 1000's of rockets into Israel, the whole world economy will collapse thanks to Israel.

Agreed, war will be a catastrophe for all players involved. But do you feel this is where we are going? If yes what do you think either Iran,Israel or the U.S. could do to stop this march to war? I have some ideas but would be interested in hearing yours.

No, I cannot see Israel or the US making this mistake, they know that there's no way of attacking Iran and getting away with it, the plan is to continue with sanctions until the people take matters into their own hands and over throw the government. But so long as China, India, Turkey and others are reluctant in going ahead with the oil embargo's the Iranian regime will survive.

If what they believe is that Iran is going to have the bomb, they have to learn to live with it, we live with a nuclear Russia, China, Pakistan, North Korea, I'm sure we can live with a nuclear Iran. These threats of attacking Iran are very old, it has to stop before it backfires.

    @Mikael
If Russia would get involved and get the Iranians to sit down with the Americans and Israelis....but Iran would never agree. Also if Iran would agree to allow U.N. nuclear watchdogs in....but again Iran won't do it.And again if Iran would agree to suspend their naval exercises this month.
Now I'm not suggesting that Iran has to do all the heavy lifting here. The U.S. has to agree to lift all sanctions and Israel has to agree to a truce on any military action.
It's a lot to ask but this is where I believe the parties involved have to go.

    @Obamanation
Ya,it also reminds me of when Saddam Hussein claimed that war with the U.S. would be the "mother of all battles",remember that? As it turned out it was the "mother of all retreats".(Desert Storm)

There's no obligation on Iran to do any of these things, they are an independent sovereign nation and will go ahead with their peaceful nuclear program and naval exercises.

War with Iran is inevitable. But the U.S. won't be much if any involved. The U.S. is too far away to do anything before Iran's professed allies, Russia and China, would come running to the rescue. The U.S. does not want and cannot afford to get into a war that includes Russia and/or China. Iran knows that and that is ONE of many reasons Iran is strutting around making threats and acting like a bully. Iran knows the U.S. with a weak cowardly President is powerless to do anything.

However, there are other forces much closer to Iran that can and will take Iran headon. If Iran and its radical Muslim allies, Egypt, Libya, Ethiopia, and other radical Muslim countries around the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf throttle trade through the Suez, you will see war. But it will come from Europe, not the U.S. And Iran, Egypt, etc will be decimated.

And, yes, at the moment Ethiopia is not a radical Muslim country, but it is fast heading that way.

    War with Iran - Inevitable?

Only if the west wants it. Iran citizens just want to get on with their lives but are surrounded by huge fleets, nuclear powers, and other countries that want their oil

Yes the U.S. is indeed far away but the U.S. fleet is in the Strait of Hormuz with it's aircraft carrier task force.Israel also can target Iran with it's long range bombers, and in this age of long range missle technology no one is really out of range from the U.S. as the Serbs found out under Milosevic.
I do agree that with Russia and China being quasi allies of Iran, that the situation could escalate with laser speed, not a good scenario for anyone.

Now would be a good time for Russia and China to take control of Iran as they would likely get blessings from the west. What's China's policy on invading countries with huge resources? Looking at Australia it seems they're happy just buying up the country.

I don't think Obama, or whoever comes next, will be interested in a ground war with Iran, or anyone else. What seems much more likely and immediate, is Israel kicking off a bombing campaign of all of Iran's nuclear enrichment facilities.

    Thats it. Nothing more.

If Iran decides to retaliate, there is a US carrier battle group in the Hormuz. Not much of a challenge really. Russia, and perhaps China, will condemn the move, but without a ground war, its hard to see how they might get involved. None of Iran's immediate neighbors want to see it with a nuclear weapon, so no worries there.

When you think about it, even the Iranian people will be mostly unaffected (Unless they work at a uranium enrichment facility)

China quietly moves around various countries securing their future by buying and investing in the resources they need. Rather than the Western preferred plan of regime change and guns, they use the tried and tested plan of a big smile and fistfuls of money. As a 4000 year old civilisation they realise that they need a long term plan. As a communist (GASP!) country they can put long term plans in place and not worry about elections and all the bullshit they entail. They can also make things happen, if they need a railroad, a dam built - they build it.

Why the west feels it has the right to refuse Iran the benefits of nuclear energy is unbelievable and as usual paranoid.

First off you are spot on about China's civilization being 4,000 years old.Recent digs at the Three Gorges area(Yangtze river) have unearthed artifacts from the Xia dynasty which date to 2,100 B.C.
And as far as the paranoia goes you could have a point there. We all remember the WMD that Iraq was supposed to have but didn't.But......what if? That's the frightening scenario here.(nuclear bomb) All Iran has to do is allow for inspections but "pride goeth before a fall".
In the name of protecting their rights and sovereignty they are willing to go to war.I would assume that the safety of their citizenry would be paramount to their national pride......what say you?

    No doubt!

    • Freedom of speech
    • Consent of the governed
    • Habeas Corpus
    • Private property
    • A government of the people, for the people, and by the people

All just part of a failed ideology. Bring on the central planning and communism(Dictatorship).

Inspections are happening as I write this. Iran has even offered an extension of time to the inspectors.

Actually no,point of fact is that Iran agreed "TODAY" to the inspections and the 2 inspectors(1 from France, the other from South Africa) will not land in Teheran until "TOMORROW".
Now here is the $64,000 question, will they have unlimited access or is Iran playing a game here? Iran is already talking about where they can go and where they can't.

Actually no, the first part of the inspections have finished.

"DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — American and European officials said Friday that a mission by international nuclear inspectors to Tehran this week had failed to address their key concerns, indicating that Iran’s leaders believe they can resist pressure to open up the nation’s nuclear program.

While the inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency, who returned to Vienna after a three-day mission in Tehran, said nothing substantive about their trip and were planning to return to Iran later this month"

As expected the yet to be released report is already being pooh poohed by the west as a failure despite the inspections only just having been finished and with further inspections to come. - Pure propaganda.

Do the US/UK allow other countries unfettered access to all their little rooms? Don't think so, so why should any other country, including Iran
