Popular gadget and technology blog, Gizmos for Geeks, is looking for their next editor. Don't be overwhelmed by what looks like a laundry list; just ask yourself if you fit the bill and more importantly, whether you would enjoy doing it.

    The ideal candidate:

    • is ambitious
    • takes initiative
    • is hands-on
    • is mostly self-managing
    • must be detail-oriented
    • must be technical particularly in Web technologies (is proficient in HTML and CSS, is not overwhelmed by PHP and perhaps knows some JavaScript)
    • is enthusiastic about technology and understands enough of it. For example, we don't need to know how a cell phone's call goes over the airwaves, but you should know the difference between CDMA and GSM; you don't need to know how assembly language works, but you should know essentially what a multi-core CPU is and so on. You would also stay up to date with what's going on in the technical world.
    • is a good writer, or has been improving rapidly
    • can move quickly in this fast-moving business
    • can create video reviews and post to popular video sharing sites
    • can take constructive criticism
    • can cultivate and maintain business relationships
    • is based in either the US or Canada (mostly for timezone logistics)

    What we expect:

    • Write a minimum of 2-3 articles per day. This isn't a time-based job, but rather one based on quantity and quality. Most of the time, articles can be scheduled well in advance, unless it's some huge piece of news (ex: Apple releases the iCar, Google buys Facebook or some such thing) in which case you would need to get an article as quickly as possible. For example, we envision that this gig could be completed entirely during a weekend plus a few hours during the week.
    • Help promote and grow the traffic and the site
    • Provide us with feedback. You would work hand-in-hand with us on things like infrastructure, site content, layout, structure, design, and direction.

Eventually, we would like you to:

    • Eventually take over handling advertising
    • (Potentially) bring new writers and junior editors on board
    • Other higher level responsibilities as the job unfolds

    Benefits and Compensation:
If you look around the forums, etc, you'll see an inordinate number of writers offering up their services at $0.01/word. While we could pay using that mechanism, we want to do something that we think would be even better - profit-sharing, pay that's tied directly to the site's earnings, so the better the site does, the more you get paid, and of course, your performance will in large part determine who well the site does. The best part is that you already have an extremely solid base to build off of, instead of starting from scratch by yourself. Gizmos for Geeks has been on the Web for over 5 years, has over 4,000 articles, and has an established brand and technology credibility.

Regarding the profit-sharing, we would be very transparent with you about earnings, and potentially even give you access to some of our accounts so you could see closer to 'real-time' how the site (and therefore you) are performing.

As a gadget and technology site, we perform and write product reviews, and are inundated with offers to review upcoming and recently-released products. In fact, more than we can handle. We would offload the majority of those product reviews to you, the benefit being that in most cases, you get to keep the product in question. The value of the product samples alone could justify this position!

For the time you end up spending on this gig, you could do very, very well and will end up with a solid entry for your resume. While we demand a high level of effort and performance of our ourselves and our team, we're pretty easy to get along with and are as fair as possible given whatever resource constraints we may have from time to time. We enjoy sharing and teaching, so you will also learn a great deal about our business that would prepare you to start your very own blog/website if you so desire.

    How to Apply:
For each of the following items/technologies/questions (even if it sounds silly), please tell us what your level of experience is with it and how long you've been using it:

    • HTML
    • CSS
    • WordPress
    • PHP
    • JavaScript
    • Computers (mention at least a few different types and OSes)
    • Video games
    • Cell phones (again, mention a few different ones)
    • Any software you're an expert or very proficient in
    • How long you've had a Twitter account?
    • How long you've had a Facebook account?
    • College degree? What major(s)? Year graduated? School?
    • Do you happen to have your resume online? What's the URL?
    • Send us links to 3 examples of your published online writing.
    • What city do you live in? (If you live in Atlanta, GA, you move up to the top of the list.)

Send us an e-mail with your bio and the answers to the above questions to jobs at gizmosforgeeks.com, and we will get back to you as soon as possible. We will let you know whether or not we are interested. If we are interested, we'll arrange a phone interview at a minimum, and discuss the position and profit-sharing mechanism in more detail. Do not PM me to apply.
    Good luck!

@br3adman - I can't fault your logic based on the info provided, but in this case, there is a minimum payment regardless of profit/loss.
