Want to shift from html site to wp

I want to shift my html website site to wp site. How to delete existing files from the server? I have installed wp at back end.

 

depends on your website, but what you need to do is to go into your web server (either through the file manager in CPanel or through FTP) and delete the old .html files..

 

Helge covered deletion, but may I suggest archiving the old site instead? Unless it's absolutely huge, you can probably spare a few megs on your hosting - or on a local drive - in which to put the content. You just know that you'll need something about 14 seconds after you've deleted it all...!

 

Thank you Helge Sverre. As I have installed multiple sites on same server therefore, little worried about what if I mistakenly delete files which are necessary or deletion of which can harm other sites. Your detailed response will be highly appreciated.

 

you are right TIEro. Can you please help me in taking backup? Nope, it's not a BIG site...just 30-35 pages. Is not it sufficient if I simply take back up of articles and URLs (pasting them in Word or Excel) rather taking backup of whole site?

 

Well after a bit of though, you should probably just compress the old files, then download the archive, then delete the files, any .HTML file in the root folder where you installed wordpress should be safe to delete... I think.

I can help you with this for a quick 15 bucks right now if you want.

 

Easiest way:

1. log in to your web space (cpanel or hosting control panel or whatever)
2. create a new folder under the main site folder, call it "backup" or something
3. open a browser and open the site
4. go through your pages, looking at the filename for each page at the end of the URL
5. move that file into the "backup" folder

Job done.

If you happen to run into a "page missing" on one of your other sites, you just log in to your web space and move the file back. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy!

Edit: And yes, if they're all just articles, take a copy of them in Word as well. Always good to have a local backup.

You're very welcome. Bear in mind that it's not REALLY a backup solution, as such, although it does back everything up. When you install WP, you should look into something like the free Updraft plugin that does proper backups automatically.

 

Have you considered checking your SEO first before moving away from html to wordpress? if not, the transfer is quite easy.
