First if you have a new site than never try too hard, just simple link building, also use your keywords in title and H1 tag.

If you are targeting very high competitive keywords than it will take time, work also on articles and press releases there are some press releases sites that allows anchor text.

Domain age is an important factor ... yes ... specially if its just a 3 to 4 months old site. Also depends on when the SE first found your site.

 

keep patience ..SEO is the name of patience. When your site domain becomes OLD it gets easy ranking in SERP, because Google gives more preference to trusted and old sites rather than new sites.
