Wordpress is a great site. You can use a godaddy.com domain and they install wordpress for you. I suggest just getting in there and start playing with it like addlinkurl said. Good plug ins to have are: Super Cache, All In One SEO, and there are others depending on what your blog is about.

If you go on the wordpress site (www.wordpress.org), there is installation guides, and pretty much everything you need to extend wordpress to your requirements, and it even has information on how to code your own plugins if you can't find what you need

    Hi,

Can you be more specific? What have you done so far and where are you at with your wordpress installation?

It's best to just download, read the installation instructions and start doing it.
When you run into roadblocks, ask here for help..that's how I learned.
People right here on DP helped me along the way, and you'll get to know things pretty quickly.

Install WordPress from the WP Page, find a WORDPRESS THEME you might need some knowledge in PHP.

Don't believe the people who're saying WP.org is easy. Sure it is for some who have spent years learning how to do this stuff. But for the average person, you will seriously miss a simple system like Blogger.

First problem: Not all of these themes you try to use are ready to plug & play. There are coding errors and other challenges in the themes. Some theme designers have good forums where they tell people how to fix the problems with their themes. Other designers just take your money for the theme and don't really try to help the customers.

I own about 6 different themes and none of them look great "as is." (Fortunately, I didn't pay for all of them.) They all need tweaking, if I want to use them. The problem might be that the columns are goofy or over lap ... it can be different things that will look crazy unless you pay someone to fix your WP theme.

Second problem: I've hired 2 different people to "fix" my WP theme(s). Neither one of them has worked out. It's been many months and this particular site still doesn't look good enough to promote people to come to it.

Third problem: Some of the plugins you're asking about aren't easy to start using either. At least they aren't for a "newbie" like you and me. Most will install just fine. But others require too much back and forth to get them set up correctly.

So I wish you luck with your site. But honestly, if you're like me, you'll have bigger fish to fry first than worrying about which plugins to use. The plugins is the least of my problems, sorry to say.

I have to agree with jewel3000, at first WP is not easy...but then again, if you have no experience with any kind of web publishing platform or web design software, there is nothing out there that is going to be easy.

There is a learning curve, but at least you can get answers from a few different places on the web. Wordpress has been around long enough that many issues, or tips have multiple forum threads and articles about them.

The first time I used WP, I had no HTML, PHP, or Graphic skills at all (some people say I still don't :))...never even seen an HTML file or PHP file. I had no idea what I was doing, the only thing I had ever published online was a Blogger and Wordpress.com blog..and even those didn't look that great.

You are going to have to learn, there is no doubt about it and no way around it, and you will get more experienced and better over time.

To say that you will download WP, read a few tutorials and publish a bad assed website the first time out would be misleading you, however, the more skills that you have currently with HTML, PHP, and Graphics the easier it will be for you.
