Adsense is the best publisher platform out there. If you've lesser traffic you still can use adsense. Those websites that have huge traffic have alternatives better than Adsense but for beginners adsense is the best.
The advantage of using Adsense is that if you do it right, they will pay you a lot of money. For the amount of effort involved, it's the most effective way to monetize traffic. If you are willing to put in a lot more work, you can earn more money through various affiliate/CPA systems, but these are not set-and-forget like Adsense is.
