Just wondering what would be the best option for someone like me with beginner to intermediate skills in HTML/CSS, but advanced skills in graphic design. Anyone have experiences running both?
I mainly use Wordpress when creating content sites. Don't want to spam, but here's one site I made recently, www. cureyouracne .net (move the .net back one space) I find that there are some great wordpress themes to use and adding content is easy, and requires little knoledge of HTML to do.
On a publisher point of view I would say that WordPress is easier to manage than Joomla (too complex) On a marketing point of view I would say that WordPress loads faster than Joomla and navigation is better with WordPress too
I run both. It all depends on what kind of site you want and what is its purpose. For membership like content site, Joomla would be best.... they have the bells and whistles to easily manage one. Looks better too. Wordpress is more "intimate"... fast to setup, easier to manage and readers are focused on your articles.
There are also a hundred other CMS options out there besides these two. I also come from a graphic design background and found a nice and simple cms called WebsiteBaker. It has less modules then the big boys like joomla but its very light weight, loads quick and its easy to work with. This is the last site I built with it http://sexypropaganda.com I like wordpress alot too, still wrapping my head around joomla, it looks good for a community site too much for a static site.
Wordpress is good and Joomla is also good but i like joomla more as it has more option than wordpress
Go with wordpress... if you use a magazine styled theme with static front page there is nothing better than wordpress.... with joomla however, there are tremendously well done themes which costs money, but then again with wordpress and those amount of money you can do the same.
Im currently enjoying Wordpress as its easy to use, i was recently able to create my first theme for it, so thats a bonus, there seems to be regular updates, plus a lot of the plugins seem to get regular updates, SE's seem to like them and of course you can always make it look less like a typical blog if you want to.
I find that wordpress is more user friendly and easier to design for your site. It's also very flexible when your adding your own html. I always use wordpress because of these reasons. Joomla is just too complex anymore.
I've used joomla and it was a beeeyatch to learn. I use wordpress for a lot of my sites but it breaks easy. What I switched to is easy CNS at cmsmadesimple.org. It really is east to use. Not a lot of themes yet but it fits my needs.
My advice is always to use Wordpress, if you can. The problem is that Wordpress achieves is stability, security, and ease-of-use, by enforcing a very rigid framework. If you cannot fit your content than you have to look elsewhere. I do not like Joomla's framework, but I think that Drupal has a relatively flexible and well thought out framework - but it does take a good amount of time to figure out how to use it, especially if you do not have a development background.
