Nice tip, just a shame I always see the same old jokes over and over. I'll keep it in mind and take action next time I see something different though!

Nice story. Bush seems to be popular person in these kinds of baits - see what shoemoney did.

I wonder how many people here copies your images and tries the same.. ;)

Well done, and thanks for sharing the brilliant idea of a semi-viral marketing campaign. The more links your site gets, the more of an authority it becomes.

Welcome to link baiting, though Im going to take a different side here and say you shouldnt be doing it for a site like yours (online shop, company, or a site where reputation is important). Why? Because now you have your professional business site tagged with a politically charged and offensive (image to some). The backlinks will be pointing to the image, not your homepage or landing page, so that page / image will start to rank higher in search engines and now you have your prospective customers seeing a non professional image on a site that should be professional.

    Here is an example.
I typed "jwpincorporated" in google and the 2nd result was:
If your site was a blog, image hosting site, or non-professional site, then Id say good work. But in your case, it could actually cause more harm then good. Remember, you're trying to build and maintain a reputation and INCREASE sales - not traffic and backlinks to non professional sections of your professional website.

We only get like 10 or 20 visitors per month that actually search for "jwp inc" or "jwpincorporated" out of the 20k+ we receive. I'm not super worried about that. And if it starts to have an effect, I will just remove the page or redirect it.

I just gave this a try and it did bring over a hundred visitors within 20 minutes or so. The traffic has died off now. How do you know how many backlinks you gained from it so soon?

Ah so that's linkbaiting. Silly question but are you emailing the link to your site, i.e. not the pic?

    tradeya,

unrelated links won't hurt your rankings unless maybe they are from porn or gambling sites. It's just that they aren't as good as related links in their power!

I agree. Although some say it does hurt you. I will take my chances with link bait though :D
BTW, since that hit SU, my traffic for woodworking related terms in the SE's has actually gone up. Weather or not it has anything to do with all the new links remains to be seen.
