I need some clarification as to how to correctly change a websites IP address on my server. I've got some spare IP's, and want to move some of them to their own. I know how to change the site's IP in WHM, but then what? I use godaddy, so do I just create a new set of nameservers and assign those IP's? But which two?
You could use external DNS managing so you don't have to run DNS yourself, such as through everydns.net. But then you just change the IP the website resolves it and it's on a new IP address.
No I don't want that, I want to point the domain to my server through nameservers I register at godaddy. It's easy enough to do for a new site, I just register the domains (ns1.mydomain.com & ns2.mydomain.com) and point those domains to my #1 and #2 IP address... then it resolves to the #1 IP address. But - say I want it to resolve to my #3 IP address, what do I do? Assign #3 and #2 to the nameservers? That's my question.
Setup BIND. I suggest you don't use BIND unless you're running cPanel or such or REALLY know what you're doing. I wouldn't dare touch BIND or run my own DNS unless you have A LOT of past experience with it already.
I run WHM and cPanel. I don't have to set it up manually, just click a few buttons. Just not sure how to do the nameservers, don't want to disrupt my highest traffic website on an educated guess from myself.
You should really ask your host, but I'll help. I did this just a couple days ago for my company. You need to create the name servers and resolve those IPs within your registrar. Then, under WHM, set your name servers properly under the server setup (the very first link on the top left). After doing that, it should take a day or two to finally resolve -- maybe less. Once that's done, any domain you setup just needs to point their DNS to your name servers and you're set to go.
I am my host :/ At any rate, yes I know I need to configure a set of nameservers to point to my IP''s, but my question is which IP do I use for the second nameserver. This isn't really that hard, I know NS1 will be the IP I want the site to propagate to, but does it matter which IP I set NS2 to? Thats my only question.
you own the datacenter? you're not your own host then Answer: Whatever other IP you want to use. You obviously need to have more than one IP address if you want to use multiple name servers which you will need for hosting. Doesn't matter which two, just pick a second -- mine were the first two we were given.
