Their webcrawler has browsed my site several times but my site isn't listed under the sports news section or even in the yahoo database at all. Do they take longer than Google? I'm already on Google

The free one I did, not the one that costs 300 bucks or whatever.

I'm a bit confused do you mean your site in the yahoo search engine rankings or your site in the directory.

Overall I've found yahoo to be a bit slower than google at getting listed
    site:www.mysite.com
but it will appear sooner or later.

As for the directories (DMOZ) and Yahoo directory it's pot luck if you'll get accepted or not; I wouldn't worry about it too much, just submit to both and forget about it for a few months/years.

Don't worry about it, Yahoo are usually slower than Google. They will index your home page first, and that will be all they will show for a while. Then they will gradually start to index the rest, once they find a few good backlinks and if it is all original content. For example, a domain I registered 2 months ago only got on the road to being fully listed last week. Now showing approx 40% of pages in a site:www.example.com search.

Edit: I just reread your post and it seems you are talking about the yahoo directory?

Yahoo is slower but you can do a couple of things to try to speed it up. If your site isn't being indexed you can try linking to it from forum signatures. You can try site submit express if you have some extra money. Yahoo! also does site maps kinda like Google. Create a .txt file with all your URLs and upload it to your root directory on your server then submit the URL of that page.

Yeah that's a good tip, I only had about 5% of my pages in yahoo, after submitting sitemap and the latest update I now have around 85% of pages listed :)
