I can't really prove anything, but im pretty sure having a semantic correct website can improve your rankings!

of course, it would push you from #4.545.765 to #1 by just having a validating site, but it would certaintly help you on your way up!

I've read that SE spiders penalize poorly coded sites. With all the free validators out there, there is no excuse for poor coding.

After a little thinking, I thing I've come up with a an answear..

Poorly coded sites will rank lower than sites with good and semantic code.

Why? Beacuse when a search engine crawls a site, the words on the top of the site will be of higher value then the words on the bottom.. Having bad code will make the code of your site longer, therefor words on your site will rank lower. Remember that the crawlers visiting your site won't see your site on a screen, the same way that we do - they will only see the code. And if the code is wack, so is your rank.

One of the main purposes of CSS is seperating the design from the content. If you make your websites with word, frontpage or any other shitty tool, the content and design won't be seperated. This means more words in your document. Another thing bad webdesign tools do, is that they define fontsize/color/family on pretty much every paragraph. This is a big waste, since this code have been done only once with CSS. This goes for many other tags in the html code to.

Conclusion: The crawler won't notice wether you have a valid code or not, but it will notice if your code is crap. IF you always keep in mind having your code valid, it probally won't be crap. So I guess you could say in some way, yes - valid codes will rank you higher.
