How important is it to have a website that Is W3C compliant? When checking other peoples websites I noticed that many of them have errors but still get good rankings and a high pr. I noticed that dmoz is compliant. If anyone can fill me in on this that would be great. I went to http://validator.w3.org/ to check my website.

    i don't think it matters

like you - i have seen many sites with top rankings that are not w3c compliant

all i can say is - it can't do any harm not being w3c compliant - but i don't think being w3c is the answer to better rankings either

To be honest I have never really thought about if any of my sites needed to be compliant. Makes me wonder if any of them really are though.

I have never noticed any difference though between sites that are and those that arnt.

You really just need to focus on making your site SEO.

it's w3c compliant first for me, and then seo follows after - the two go together. For me anyway. There shouldn't be any need to subvert w3c in order to achieve good seo.

It won't matter from a search engine's perspective, since it'll still have to crawl through the code to get to the text, but (and I'm saying this as a Web developer, not an SEO consultant/enthusiast/expert or anything) don't let that serve as an excuse to write sloppy spaghetti code. Your site will have LOTS of trouble rendering properly cross-browser unless you apply a lot of unneeded hacks for Internet Explorer, Firefox, and other major Web browsers such as Opera, Konqueror and Safari, will take forever to load, and hardly be usable to the majority of visitors, and may even be inaccessible to large portions of your visitor base. And if people can't access or use your site, then they're not going to return. Worse still, they'll tell others how bad your site is and to never even bother going there.

The worst part of it is though, this translates directly into a loss of regular return visitors, users and customers.

I think very few people ensure their sites are compliant because they don't even check to see whether it is.

It's usually because they either don't know or flat out don't care.

Checking to see if your site is compliant might help you spot html errors. I make sure all my sites are valid XHTML, but it's a personal preference.

Today I am gonna see if any of my sites are which I highly doubt will be compliant.

I have a question though can a site that is PHP become w3c compliant?

Just make sure the HTML (or XHTML) the PHP code produces is valid. A simple trip to http://validator.w3.org will tell you.

Remember, it doesn't matter if you use ASP, ASP.NET, Java Server Pages (JSP), Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby or any other server-side programming language. All the browser (and the search engine spiders) will see is the HTML code (and CSS/JavaScript) that is produced by it. That's it.
