I am considering changing to VPS, probably from powervps or ASO. My question is how difficult is it to run a virtual private server? I am used to cpanel and whm, and have no experience with anything else.. Can I just keep on using these two with vps, or is there more involved? Is it really worth it to go vps rather than standard reseller hosting?
Depends. A VPS is nice to get a feel and have the control of a dedicated server. That being said, there are some short coming too it as well. I don't really have the time to get into right now but will try to reply later with more.
To add to my question: Im getting lots of 'server 500' errors on one of my sites. Is this related to using too many resources, and will it be fixed by moving to a vps? thanks
I use a VPS through ServInt. Personally I love it. Cpanel takes care of all the hard stuff and I have full control to do whatever I want.
i also run my site on servint. they just rock. very less downtime. had only 2 outages since i am using (6 months) total 6 Min. cpanel or plesk make life easy. But you have take care of some of secrity like hardening server. but staff and their support forum will help a lot. also if you are using cpanel trasfers will be also easy. just import from your old capnel and you are done. only thing you have change is DNS. now this really depends on lots of things. can you give more info ?
'server 500' can sometimes be caused by the server being unable to respond due to overloading. If you are frequently getting that on your shared hosting accoutn, I'd suggest you move your site to a VPS or dedicated server, depending on the load that your site would bring.
get a managed vps if you are new to it... servint is not the cheapest, but they have a rep for really good service... do some searches at www.webhostingtalk.com
cPanel really takes care of all of the hard stuff for you. I ran a dedicated server and basically ran down this list to secure my server (you need to login http://forums.cpanel.net/showthread.php?t=30159&page=1 ). It was pretty neat and I got a feel for it.
