Hello. I am starting as a sysadmin for a small bussiness. We wat to migrate our services from liquidweb to something more reliable on mail servers. It's known that mail servers use a considerable amount of memory. We are resellers and we have a simple plan on liquid web with 1GB of physical memory and 1.5 GB on swap but it's not enough because exam has crashed several times. Is there something I can do to get the best performance from exim? Or is there some hosting with a pre-tuned configuration for best performance on basic plans, I mean with minimal resources? Or how can I validate the reputation on mail servers for a vps hosting? Thanks.
How much are you looking to spend? You may be better off upgrading your existing VPS to one with more RAM. I checked your host out and they are a bit expensive. If you want to shop around you can find something cheaper. $30 for a 2-core 2 GB RAM fully managed VPS with cPanel can be found. If you can do without cPanel and no management (not advised unless you are an expert server admin), you can go a little cheaper still. Out of curiosity, how many emails is your server sending out per day?
Use this server for the job. You will not be disappointed with this setup. Always on is the key to your request and delayed sending so you do not get the ip band. So if your sending 3900 emails in one day, you should have your program setup to delay send 32 mails then pause for 15 seconds then send more mail, this will get your mail off without any downtime VPS Ultimate - 100 GB Disk Space 3024 MB Guaranteed RAM 4048 MB Burstable RAM 4000 GB Bandwidth 1 Gbps Network Speed 2 IPv4 Addresses 5 IPv6 Addresses 4 Cores / 8 Threads Instant Setup $49.95/month Promotional Code: 1MLWN5YTI3
Have you considered using a 3rd Party Mail Server such as Zoho, which is Free up to 10 accounts. If you have a few extra bucks you can check out Rackspace, or even use Google Apps. This way you will not have to worry about your Mail server crashing. I do know that you should have at least 8GB of Ram to run a Mail server properly. You can always host your own, such as Zimbra from a decent VPS, as you are a System Administrator, then you should have no issues using and Administrating a Zimbra Server.
