VPS linux server setup? howto?

    i am newbie to vps except i know the very basics. I dont know what needs to setup for a basic linux server. i want mysql,php and mail server.

    what basic RAM is needed? 128 ok?
    what needs to be installed?

    can anybody please shed some light on this?

    Virtuozzo is the most common VPS software platform that I know of.

    as far as what hardware you'll need, that depends on how many people will be using the server and what kind of traffic you expect.

    128mb ram is very low for a server, though.

    If you gonna use some control panel then 128 is too low.256-512 is okay for vps :).You can setup some control panel and mostly control panel install bind,apahce itself..:)

    I'd recommend atleast 256MB guaranteed and 512MB burst RAM. Also, DirectAdmin is a real cheap, resource efficient and effective control panel solution for a VPS. Most providers charge $5-7/month extra for directadmin license. Apache,php,mysql,mail,bind etc are automatically installed with directadmin. You should also get some VPS manager panel to start,stop,backup and reload a VPS.

    Webmin is a nice open source control panel that lets you manage resources on a server. thats what i run on mine. I didn't want Cpanel on my server because it eats memory.

    mysql apache and other packages are easy to install with Yum or Apt depending on whether if you go for a redhat or debain style server.

    yes...this is where directadmin scores over cpanel...it can run acceptably fast even on a 64MB vps. Moreover, its real cheap if you get a license from the NOC

    Yep, thats ture.Direct admin is normally charged 7$ per vps & 14$ per server..yes it use very less resources but cpanel has it's own value.:cool:

    if you want VPS, the RAM shall be at least 1GB, 128MB is too small for a server

    I have never had 1GB of ram on a VPS (but I am willing to try!!!) but the answer to your question comes down to what you are going to run on your VPS. Got a couple static pages and only using the VPS for the bw? 128 is fine. Got a PHP/MSql site with 30k pv a day? Expect lots and lots of downtime.

    that's right . VPS will be most preferred in future . Virtuozzo is good control panle as i know .

    hehe...Virtuozzo is not a control panel but merely the virtualization technology! And those who are recommending 1Gb ram for a VPS, go get a dedi box!
