VPS Hosting Questions

I've been using a shared hosting account for quite some time and have been looking for a new host because of performance issues. My sites (5) always seem to be dragging, email is never on time, my monitoring service is always barking at me, etc. I really can't afford a dedicated server so am wondering about a VPS account. I'm not a greenhorn, but am not a server administrator by any means either.

    1. Can the average Joe handle the maintenance involved with a VPS? Is the much to it?
    2. Is the performance typically a lot better with one of these accounts?
    3. Any suggestions as to who has the best offer for one of these accounts?

Any info you have would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi,

I suggest you get a VPS with a fully managed service. That way you get full access like a dedicated server, but really dont have to worry about maintaining your server up. If you need something fix, ask your provider.

    Usually, managed services include monitoring.

Usually a VPS is on a powerfull server so yes, performance can be improved. However, I suggest you dont get the most cheap VPS you find. You get what you pay for.

I would suggest http://www.wiredtree.com , for their best support and reliability. I am a customer with them for more then 7 months. Even if I pay more then other provider, I wouldnt dare changing provider. Support is top notch.

Another great suggestion would be http://www.jaguarpc.com

    Hope this help

Camay ~ Thanks for the response. I will look into both of your suggestions.

Is there a big difference between Windows & Linux VPS? One of my sites is a PHP with MySQL Database, but the rest are basic HTML sites. Any suggestions here?

I dont have a clue of how windows work for hosting.

But, I believe you are better off with Linux for PHP and mysql

I'd suggest Linux, otherwise you'd be paying licensing fees for Windows + Control Panel(s) which you don't specifically require. CentOS or Fedora (CentOS is better) are two nice server operating systems.

As Camay123 said, you should opt for a fully managed service, where everything is taken care for you. Basically shared hosting, but just for you, all you have to worry about is making money (well, anything except the hosting :)).

We offer managed VPSes, with free account copy, so we can make the transition seamless, if you're interested, talk to me on Live Chat, or PM us.

There isn't a lot to it, but you may need someone on hand if something goes a bit wrong.

Yes, greatly improved as all the resources are dedicated.

There are loads of companies out there :)

    Thanks,

    Jay

There are very different VPS hosting services. I know Virtuozzo solutions, they are probably the most appreciated from VPS users. A decent VPS would cost you $20 - $100 epr month depends of hardware resources and services model. If you can not manage your virtual server you can use Fully Managed VPS hosting.

One thing to avoid. There are companies that think of VPS the way oversellers do of shared hosting. Stay away from them.

Virtuozzo and OpenVZ are the main ones that encourage overselling, hence why we don't use it ourselves. I'm not saying every host that uses it oversells, but be careful if the prices are too cheap.
