VPS for directories or not

After thinking about this for a while i have decided to move my Bidding Directory and a couple of my other directories to a VPS

Do you think vps is a good idea for directories or do you think shared hosting is good enough

Why Vps And Not Shared Hosting?
Full Root Access & ability to install customized script.
Define the server environment for customer.
Isolated and protected from other domain on the server which may be abusing the server or overusing server resources.
Dedicated mail, MySQL, FTP, http server.
    Dedicated Outgoing MailServer IP.

Edit: Just realized this was my 2500 post yeah

I am now using 3 hosting accounts that total around $50 a month for all my sites, I could probably move to a VPS server for another $30 or so a month and have considered it, but things are running smoothly so I just won't bother right now. I guess if any of my sites started getting large traffic, 1k uniques a day I would consider it.

When I left hostgator in a panic around 9 months ago I was seriously looking into VPS but I figured I would need other hosting while making a decision on which VPS host to go with. So I got a reseller with site5 and was happy, then I picked up a couple of other reseller accounts with budgethost.ca becauses site5 was giving me a hard time with additional ip's.

    good luck

Shared hosting is good enough for directories, but you need to have unique IP.
But if you have directory that receive very manu hits daily, the best way is to buy a VPS or beter a dedicated server.

many hosts are now refusing to give out unique ip`s unless you buy ssl certificates or get a vps now so extra ip`s is difficult on some hosts

I am in Europe so I use European server for my directories, the best and cheapest one is http://www.netdirekt.de, you get 1000 Mhz processor, 512 MB of ram and 20 GB space + 1000 GB traffic monthly!
Also you get 3 uniques IP for free :)

I was looking at load balanced clustered vps servers to provide the speed for both USA and European traffic, I think that will be my next step up the food chain.

I can only encourage you to check out zone.net.
    I am with them, too.

My website receives between 9,000 and 12,500 unique pageviews a day and
I am now at zone.net and their VPS hosting is awesome,
not only the speed the my pages now load with, but also the custom support that helped me out with the domain transfer and setting up the VPS.

I got the VM-200 Virtual Enterprise Server that comes with 768MB memory, 25GB space and 400GB traffic a month. The server specs are as following:

    Plesk version psa v8.1.1_build81070423.15 os_FedoraCore 5
    Operating system Linux 2.6.9-023stab044.4-enterprise
    CPU GenuineIntel, Intel(R) Xeon(R)CPU E5345 @ 2.33GHz

It is a bit pricey at 65$ a month, but one of their service staff members gave the following promo-code to me:

It is FIFTEENOFF and deducts 15% of every monthly amount-payable, leaving this server beast at 55$ a month, which is financially sustainable as long as my dear users continue to click those ads that make sense to them.

In contrast to Liquidweb the package I have at zone.net has 256MB more ram at a lower price.
Also they have five datacenters to choose from within the United States in contrast to two at LW.
You can choose to put your server in the NewYork datacenter to meet the European traffic!

I recently got to know while trying to sort out my German .de domains, that they run a special promotions campaign this summer. They got some cool new special deals this summer.
Just drop a line if you want to know more.

How quickly things change, since I posted my above reply on Jul 6th 2007, 1:58 pm I have had nasty run-in with www.site5.com and the basically threw me out in a very rude way.

I also joined up with www.zone.net and although as stated above the prices are not cheap, you do get quite a powerful setup and it is a fully managed solution. Initially I needed some quick help getting all my sites over from site5 because they were threatening to delete my data so Sean K. of zone.net helped me get this done quickly and smoothly. My sites seem to be running very fast from this server.

I went ahead and got a full dedicated server. :)

I think your hosting package can pretty much be representative of your seriousness in your endeavors.

Now I'm just waiting for google to update and then i'm xfering several sites.

It depends all on traffic really. Traffic affects several things:

bandwidth - how much data gets trasfered depends largely on how many people come and request this data
CPU usage - more visits means more processes being run and taking the CPU usage.
Databases - more traffic means more mysql queries - I HAD to move from shared hosting - my high traffic sites breached the allowed mysql open connection limit - most shared hosts allow between 25-50 mysql database connections open. semi dedicated or dedicated hosts have a much larger limit

there are other things to consider, but shared hosting for a web directory with good traffic = recipe for disaster.

Good traffic as defined by the shared host can be as little as 100-150 uniques a day depending on how many other sites you are running on the same account, because even if you are not near the max resources allocated it appears most hosts don't want you.

I guess the bottom line is if you are really serious about earning a living either full-time or part-time on the web you should factor in $50-$100 a month for hosting IMO.
