VPS beginner. What control panel?

    Hi,

I have only used shared hosting plans so far, but now I need to upgrade to VPS. As I have no idea of linux and server administration and my provider doesn't offer technical support on VPS, I am wondering what is the best configuration and control panel closest to cPanel but free.
Of course I will have someone to do the settings but it should be easy to use after that: like adding new domains, subdomains, e-mails and other similar things from the control panel. It will be good to be able to make automatic back up.

    Regards

HyperVM and LxAdmin is the closest for free one out there. Does everything you mentioned and more.

It may or may not be a good choice for you based on the type of sites you have.

    Thanks for the advice.
What do you think of VHCS. I heart that it is very good but hasn't been updated since last year.
Also are these control panels loading the server as it has only 92 Mb of RAM?

If you have 92 MB RAM, LxAdmin host-in-a-box is the way to go...look no further. Comes free if your VPS host uses HyperVM.

VHCS is good enough, yes a bit old but stable. Great combo with Debian Sarge.
Also there's a fork coming called ISPcP Omega based on VHCS code. Looks promising.

I think you should look for managed vps hosting providers.

Sorry for bringing this topic up again.
Unfortunately I can't use a managed VPS at this time as it should be in a specific country and the price for a managed one here is not very good :)

I have one last question. Is there any control panel that could work with an already set up VPS or all of them require to start from the beginning. Currently my server uses Slackware 12 as operating system and has already apache, mysql and ftp.

Well if you ask me, very few control panels support slackware.

If your host doesn't offer free LxAdmin, ask them to load Debian+VHCS.
Good enough for low RAM VPSs.

    Use LxAdmin/DA/VHCS but not cPanel.

Majoy Control Panels dont support Slackware. Would recommend CentOS/Debian

    Thanks all for the advice.
I've been thinking about Debian+VHCS from the beginning and you confirmed my thoughts. I had doubts about it as my vps provider told me that there was a bug in VHCS that didn't allow setting of domains which according to them made it useless. Have you heard of such a bug? Also VHCS hasn't been updated for more than a year - does that mean that they stopped working on it?

Well you could then try ISPConfig or ISPcp Omega (VHCS fork)

BTW, LxAdmin would have been best for your VPS.
