VPS and/or dedicated hosting questions

I am looking to move to a virtual private server.

I own several sites like cash home buyers .com and am looking to get better performance.

I am also starting a wordpress cms real estate site that will have a large database that will have alot of searches done on it.

I am most likely going to use http://crystaltech.com/vps.aspx

I am looking for advice on what other options I would want on the server. I am not a techie guy, nor do i want to really learn how to do stuff. So what options should i add to the server? And are there things that it would make sense to hire out?

And should i do windows or linux hosting? What other info should i be aware of.

    thanks
    scott

Welll I would always say use linux for a VPS, but if you don't know any of it windows could be better for you as it will cost you more with the licence.
cPanel is nice and easy to install about 3 lines and your done, after that there is plent of tutorials on places like WHT showing you how to secure a VPS or dedicated server.
You should maby llok into a managed vps if you don't know server management yet, although the only real way to learn is getting a vps and finding out the hard way.

If you are using wordpress, don't need to go with Windows VPS. A Linux VPS will be better. How do you define "lot of searches done on it"? It really affects to your VPS performance. We have a wordpress site with 34K alexa sorting, and it needs a 4GB RAM VPS to handle its load, especially when the owner posts some sport games, not 512MB.

Try to check out Knownhost.com. They have a 'hybrid server' package. Support is excellent. I suggest you choose Linux hosting as it is more secure and stable.

For management, if you get a linux VPS, you can get it from platinumservermanagement.com.

Just out of curiousity, would possibly a semi dedicated plan work better for you? Semi dedicated is as easy to use as a shared account, but with a lot more resources.

You say you don't want to learn the tech side, so you'll need to find someone to manage/help you with that.

If you want to be serious, go with Linux. I've had much more luck finding knowledgeable Linux admins than Windows admins.
