Note: I have been advised to post this here, by an admin on DP,so hopefully this is the right location. I did ask before posting. Hi guys, I need some advice on VPNS, as I'm struggling to get one up and running. I have set up windows server 2012 R2 (Echange), and I have installed the roles and features to allow for a VPN to function. I have allowed the appropriate ports to be passed through the router/firewall, and I have even taken down the firewall at times for testing. My problem is I can connect to the VPN, but I'm unable to do anything once connected. I've tried connecting with a windows Vista machine and a Linux machine. Both establish a connection and stay connected, but they're unable to browse any directories, or use the internet through the vpn. On the vista machine, I constantly get a limited connectivity message on the network status, and the vista machine is always firing bytes over to the VPN, but it recieves 371 bytes back, and then stops. I imagine the 371 is just the VPN server sending the initial message back saying welcome. Anyway the router/firewall is a Vigor 2830 series. (I've followed a collection of online guides for setting this up and everyone of them has guided me through what needs to be done, with the same issue. I've also had a fellow technician in to look, and he can not see a fault, it just doesn't operate). Does anyone have an suggestions? oh the VPN is a pptp connection.
Does it have to be a Windows based VPN? I'm running a Dedicated Server on CentOS 6.5 and I have a VPN running perfectly which my phone/windows computers connect through.
Erm, probably not. It's set up in theory, as it connects and is remaining connected, so I'm sure it's just a small config issue. To be honest with you, it may not even be the server, it could be the router/firewall, in which case switching over to a linux based VPN would result in the same issue wouldn't it?
Note for anyone who has read this. I've established the problem that I was experiencing. After researching what was going wrong, I discovered a similar issue with Windows 8, which was resolved through a hot fix. There has been no mention of this being an issue with windows 2012 R2, but the solution I found was a server update, it is an additional update and not a neccesary one. Upon performing the update and restarting the server, the VPN now remains connected, with access and no issues. I hope this helps with anyone who has been googling this issue. I'll write up the entire thing on my blog... www.bestwebhosts.co.uk for anyone who is having similar issues. Look for the article within the next week.
Out of interest do you know what was updated for this to work? Also if anyone wants the guide to installing a VPN on a Linux machine it's the second post here > http://first2forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=551
