That is only because Defender is set on. If you disable Defender, User Access Control and disable Aero and other animation, you should get the same speed as XP.

RAM is key for Vista's success...so either upgrade it, get a new computer, downgrade to XP (not worth it) or check your motherboard.

I ran my Windows Vista with a 1gb RAM system with shared graphic memory so that leaves me with just about 748mb RAM and my Vista runs as fast as my XP.

Of course, like I said earlier, I disabled Aero, all the fancy animation, UAC and Defender.

Try it if you have not done so then see the improvement in performance.

You can use vLite to cut some Vista components and gain some performance.

All you need to do is downgrade.
XP is fine, there isn't too much reasoning for upgrading to Vista.

1gb is way too little for vista i would say go with at least 2gb as min, 4gb for average use and 8gb for best performance ...

vista is bloated so its normal for this OS to eat up your resources
the best thing is to disable the sidebar and all the bloated features to save memory and cpu

on my laptop with 1gb ram and 1.6ghz single core centrino the cpu usage on idle is around 70% which is awfully too high and i cant even use my laptop for a normal daily use : surf websites + check emails + listen to song/watch series + few IM + download, ,my cpu usage soars over 99% and stucks there

man i revert back to xp and i can do all of them without any hassle and only use about 300MB of ram max and 30% of my cpu

Don't think that would work on 32bit PCs.

I ran it very smoothly on a dual boot with 3 other operating systems on 2GB of RAM, but Microsofts reccomendation is 1GB, so you should be able to operate relatively OK on 1-1.5GB.

Hey, you are right! That's what I did and my Vista works perfectly! But I still keep it's aero glass effect and some others because it's the only way to make vista look like vista :D

By the way, RAM on my notebook is only like 512 + 256 and Vista is not slow here. I also disable many many unnecessary processes running in the background, just google it and you'll find lots of processes that can be turned off.

    Cheers
