Your information regarding the codebase in incorrect. With Vista SP1, Vista will share the Windows 2008 base code. This in effect will be like when we had Windows 2000 Professional for workstations and Windows 2000 Server for servers, with the same codebase.

Even the rep at Best Buy recommended that I do not upgrade to vista. He mentioned that benchmarking at idle it used over 30% CPU. Could depend on available resources
Yes. Run vista with a stronger system and you will notice the difference and what vista has to offer. By stronger I mean >1GB RAM, 128MB Graphics and core 2 duo processor.
Bestbuy reps suck believe me. Vista sp1 is coming in february and it increases performance a whole lot more!
I'm staying with XP for the time being. I just finished migrating a laptop back to XP from Vista. I have managed to make XP perform the way I want. It'll be interesting to see how SP1 performs.
Yes... and the same performance vista will have on powerful pc you can have at XP system with 512MB and some old processor And that's still Windoze. Try Linux and you will have far superior performance on lowend machines. Plus it's free
Vista supports new hardware more natively though, like 64-bit processors, dual and quad cores, as well as over 4 gigs of memory. The way I always saw it was, if you have an older PC, stick with XP (no rhyme intended, lol). However, If you a have a nice beasty system, there is no reason not to run Vista. I agree! I'm growing rather fond of OpenSuse 10.3 and KDE 4
How are you guys finding Linux for real work? Can you do all of your website work on it? ie. photoshop, flash, web software, etc.? There is no way I will get Vista, so I am sticking with XP for sure, but your talking about linux on your pc's has got me interested.
I have never bothered to use vista after all those bad comments i used to see in forums and blogs. But yeah, maybe I will try it out someday. Currently my laptop wont support it i think, its of 512 ram and got a intel celeron m processor
If you have got a good system then u can try Vista. It looks good. But no point in getting new PC just to use Vista when XP doing so good.
I have used XP for 3 years now. And im probably going to use it even when something newer than Vista comes out. If i don't feel the new one is performing well. Im not suprised to read this at all.
Unfortunately, you won't be able to launch Photoshop or Flash in most Linux distributions (although I have heard it could be done with cedega/wine). That's the biggest handicap and that's why linux isn't good choice for designers. But all other usual software works or have better alternatives under linux. And you can still run Windows in a little windows in linux, just for photoshop Also there is Gimp (photoshop alternative under linux) but in my opinion photoshop is much better so I would, being on your place, dualbooted Linux + XP just for adobe software, or you could be using adobe applications in virtual OS under linux.
There are a alternatives to your favorite programs: photoshop gimp dreamweaver bluefish etc. look around and it all open source. Good luck
I think vista is designed taking the modern day scenario. The hard ware prices have decreased,the security need is heightened. Any way if you want to stick to windows then it is better to get accustomed to vista from now onwards.
My xp machine is a e6400 core2duo and my vista machine is a e6600 core2duo. My vista machine shuts down up to 3x faster, I run games and multi task to the max and I'm still saying my vista machine is smoother. I know i know everyone is arguing that xp is benchmarking better right? well If you get that stout video card on your xp machine and loose 5 fps on your vista machine does it really make a difference? Would i rather have the convince and cool features? ya.
