This might be a very basic question but when I install vista will it automaically uninstall xp or do i have to uninstall xp myself first.
You may want to do the upgrade first, make sure everything works (heard some horror stories with hardware)... if not you can uninstall it. If you find it works, format then do clean install. A couple extra steps, but, may save a lot of headaches later.
The vista upgrade does not allow you to uninstall it the last time I checked! Well, at least for the beta version.
Oooh, good point, if this is true with the final release... something to check into before taking my advice, hehe... it figures that it wouldn't, actually... leave it to MS
Vista isn't great (apart from looks) at the moment so I would.... ...learn how to dual-boot XP and Vista here
I have just been quoted £60+vat at my local computer shop to wipe my hard drive and install vista on my laptop, i think it will be best if i do it myself.
True. And some of the flash drive need drivers, . Not all flash drive/thumb drive are compatible. Even for printers, you need to downloads drivers from the manufacturer website for the vista drivers.
You can dual boot. This is when you have two operating systems on the same machine. You can do this by partitioning your hard drive to C and D if it is not already and installing vista on the hard drive that xp is not already on. You do get a choice when installing vista if you would like to "upgrade" this is where you will not loose your programs or files. Make sure you back up just incase tho
I have not bought Vista yet, but I would do a clean install, which means uninstall / remove xp. Also, as advised, make sure that the hardware is powerful enough. Vista eats a lot.
If I were to have taken the plunge and bought Vista, I would first find a blank hard drive, remove my existing XP drive and install Vista on the blank drive to make sure all works as expected. Also, I would NEVER, EVER do an upgrade. To dirty.
