yes, some laptop brands offer a tuning tool for vista, speeds up your computer ~10 times even with only 1GB. just search for "Windows XP" or "Windows 2000", thats what you need.

What are going to be the specs of the new system? If you are getting a low end system, you are better off running a 32 bit version of XP. If you are loading it up with 3 GB of Ram or more, then go with 64 bit XP. If you are only going to be doing word, excel, simple games, internet, etc. then stick to 32 bit, because it will run faster.

There isn't any benefit I am aware of to running the 64 bit version of XP, unless you are going over the 3 GB Ram spec, and/or if you are running high end graphics like in games or video editing or similar programs.

As for Vista complaints. Dual Core Processor and 2 GB of Ram should be enough to handle anything you can throw at Vista. 3 GB or more of Ram is better. As for the person using 512 MB of Ram.... that wasn't even enough to keep XP satisfied. Using that amount on Vista is just asking for trouble. 2 GB is the minimum for Vista. You also need a good video card 256 MB should do fine. Vista is not for the faint of heart. If you can't afford a decent machine, then stay away from Vista.

Those bottom of the line systems on the shelves during xmas is why IT guys have plenty of work on the new year. Computer salespersons should be certified in giving people advice on systems, instead of swindling them out of their hard earned money for junk.

There aren't many apps compatible with 64 bit operating systems yet.

    That's simply not true.
I have Ultimate 64 and all of my apps, games and drivers work fine, there is a backwards compatability factor that ensures 99% of things work fine.

I hear that some older printers struggle but mine was fine (HP7700).

Sorry I was referring to Vista, but I did have 64bit XP for about 3 months before Vista, didn't notice any problems but then I didn't use it a huge amount so it wouldn't be fair to give a full review.

The main problem with software is driver availability for 64 bit XP. Some printers will either not have an availalbe driver for 64 bit XP or it will install, but be unstable. This is not as big a problem as it used to be. There should be very few devices that don't have drivers for 64 bit XP. There are older printers, however, that are not compatible with Vista.

I'm running Vista business 64bit on a coreduo quad, 2GB ram, and 2GB turbocharge flash drive.
I wanted a 64bit OS, and buying XP 64bit to me looked like a waste because it will be discontinued rather soon.

It runs nice even with a lot of background services.
I'm not really impressed about Vista, it comes with tons of useless things you need to turn off (some are really annoying), but so far it is stable.
Got no problem with my old hp printer (hp940C) and all my devices (webcam, wireless keyboard/mouse bluetooth dongle works smooth)

you mean the apple mac rebranded version of linux

Just stick with XP... acording to somthing I read on slashdot only a small number of business have plans to move to vista, most will stick with XP until the next version of windows.... microsoft will be extending XP support life long past 2010 because of this.

Vista isnt doing so well, no just because its bloated to shit and has lots of other problems, but because of XP's success.

Stick with XP, there's no big reason to use Vista at the moment - you can get same looks and functionality on XP and without bugs....

Most such freezes are also caused due to Crapware installed on pre-installed OEM Vista machines. So check up which programs you don't need and uninstall them. Clean up with a Registry Cleaner to clean up residual junk registry entries. PC DeCrapifier is a nifty program which can help you identify Craplets.

Also remove from Start-ups several non-Microsoft items which you think you don't need them to start up, every time you boot.

... and if your Internet Explorer Freezes In Windows Vista:

    1) use the manage Add-ons tool, and disable each one after the other to find out which one is causing the problem.

    2) Else in Internet Options, go to Advanced Tab and click on Reset tab. Restart IE. This step deletes all temp files, disables any add-ons, plug-ins, toolbars and also resets all changed settings to default. Although this is a quick-fix, you will have to re-install the add-ons.

I would advocate you to uninstall vista and go for its lower version i.e. xp. That is the best option available :D
